For Beer Lovers: Don’t pass out, pass over*
Filed Under Politics | Comments Off
I don’t drink beer. There’s a story why and I’m not writing about it tonight. But other than sweet malt Maccabee beer in Israel, I don’t drink beer, I rarely buy beer and, unless a recipe calls for it, I don’t even pour beer.
However, to end the evening on a fun note, take a look at the anniversary goings-on at He’Brew, 10 years of Schmaltz malts. With Cuyahoga County being 35th in the highest concentration of Jews among counties in the USA, He’Brew should sell well here. More than 80 distributors are listed under Ohio, including Heinen’s and Corky and Lenny’s.
L’Chaim indeed.

Vice Chair of Ohio House subcommittee on Transpo & Justice commits theft
Filed Under Politics | Comments Off
Ohio House Representative Earl Martin (R-Avon Lake, District 57) is the vice chair of the Ohio House Subcommittee (of the Finance and Appropriations Committee) of the Transportation and Justice Subcommittee.
You’d think, with an assignment like that – you know, with Justice in it?, he’d know what this language means on Jeff Coryell aka Yellow Dog Sammy’s venerable political blog, Ohio2006:

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License.
But no, it seems that this Republican, like so many before him, believes that he is above such industry-standard declarations and perhaps even the law itself.
Read more here, then write Martin and demand that he immediately cancel any and all advertising using any images or descriptions from Jeff’s blog and publically apologize to Jeff.
You should also take a look at Matt Lundy, Martin’s Democratic rival.

OH 14 Dem candidate Lew Katz blogging on PD’s Open Mike
Filed Under Politics | Comments Off
Although Lew Katz was a professor while I attended Case law school, I didn’t have him as an instructor. I did get to meet him at his second Meet the Blogger’s session last Friday.
Likewise, you can read what he has to say here, here and here, on the no longer dormant Open Mike feature of the Plain Dealer’s OPEN site for political news.
I’ll write more fully at a later time about his MTB appearance, but he mentioned his three R (reduce, replace and redevelop) plan for what he believes our country’s approach should be re: Iraq. When asked about whether he had help formulating this plan, he said he did and he named General Joseph Hoar and two well-known Case law professors, Michael Scharf and Amos Guiora. General Hoar was on Talk of the Nation from the 2-3pm hour on WCPN today and you can listen here after 6pm.

I wouldn’t have thought that they’d have much in common. But, indeed, they have at least one thing.

Cue Wayne and Garth time warp music and scan the Chandra v. Dann Meet the Bloggers debate review I did in late March ’06.
Shared, common interests. That’s what we all need to focus on instead of pressed to the wall positions.
Kumbaya.
Not.
FYI and Hattip: The picture is from this New York Times article about Allen and Democratic opponent, James Webb’s debate on Meet the Press yesterday. If you don’t know anything about Webb, and the article is even 50% accurate, the choice is a no-brainer for Webb.

Reason #51 to VOTE NO on Issue 3
Filed Under Politics | Comments Off
Because “gambling addictions rise near slots.” Read the report upon which this article is based.
Even Charles Ruma, the chairman of the Ohio Learn and Earn Committee, say “slots parlors in Ohio would likely create more problem gamblers,” according to the Plain Dealer.
And doesn’t the fact that national certification for gambling counselors (as in mental health, not legal representation) indicate the severity of and regularity with which gambling is a problem for people?
Hattip to the PD for concluding the article with this W.C. Fields quote:
“Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake.”
Vote NO on Issue 3.

I rented The Aristocrats for tonight so I won’t be watching this CNN special. Some folks might think that’s uncharacteristically irresponsible of me, given my involvement in the education and upbringing of profoundly gifted children. But frankly, I don’t expect the special to mention anything I don’t know – it’s only one hour, you know? I’ve been immersed in the field for more than ten years and have a live specimen or two in my home.
Still, I am one for thinking that we never stop learning and I will make the rounds tomorrow of the commentary and website materials. If you watch, I hope you’ll let me know what you think, or, if you have a blog, post your thoughts there. I’ll find them.
