That’s the word on the street at the Goldman Sachs XVI Communacopia Conference:

Murdoch gave his strongest statements to date the WSJ.com will go free following the purchase. He says they haven’t made up their mind completely, but that the company doesn’t feel it would hurt subscription revenues and that any lost revenue would be more than made up from increased readership and search engine traffic.

For those of us who’ve gotten around subscriptions for months, years and longer, let me repeat myself and add to my SEO value: big deal. (Here’s a post on the liberation of the NYT’s online content.)

What’s far more interesting is: who can give a good graph on Communacopia? This year is its 16th. And I cannot find a word about it, beyond announcements of who is presenting there and this template for 2006’s attendees to watch webinars.

All you business folk out there – what’s the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference and why doesn’t it have a Wikipedia entry?

Personally, I think this is a horrible, horrible mistake. I know these sites are beatable, I’ve done it myself. But I don’t believe the 527, MSM can remain profitable without charging something for their content. And I don’t think they will make up the difference in increased traffic and ad revenue.

Covering the news costs money, lots of it. It’s people intensive, just like teaching children, and is always going to cost big bucks.

And while blogs are breaking some big stories, most simply don’t have the resources to do it day in and day out.

Well, it is interesting that this is coming from Murdoch. He hasn’t made his gazillions by making bad decisions, though I’m sure, over the years, he’s lost some money that he’s risked.

Also – you know – this whole notion of the 527 media? You do know that it’s a small minority of people who would even know what you’re talking about? Not that that doesn’t mean something, but still – it is not a widely held theory among the average news consumer.

I know on the 527 thing, but I just like the way it sounds. Plus its like a little inside joke.

By joke, do you mean, people don’t really believe the theory? Based on some of what I’ve read, those who use the expression seem pretty convinced of it’s existence, yes?

How about code word, instead of joke?

    Or inside baseball, etc.

Well – I just wanted to better understand what you were saying. There’s a difference between talking inside baseball and sharing an inside joke.
