The Story of Jonah and the Whale, circa 5768. (Features links to very fun memories if you were a child in the 1960s.)
And for George Bush to recite, yet again.
See you on the other side.

Remains of the Day, 9-21-07
Filed Under Remains of the Day | Comments Off
The holy day of Yom Kippur commences this evening at sundown with the Kol Nidre service and ends tomorrow after sunset. She who writes like she talks will return on Sunday.
If you’ve never heard Leonard Nimoy do The Birthday of the World series for the Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur holy days, I would urge you to sign up here and listen, free, to the entire broadcast. This service, by the way, PRX? Is a fantastic, free resource to hear public radio series and shows.
1. Follow the Maggie Thurber Challenge to the Food Stamp Challenge. Do you agree or disagree with her approach? Please contribute to the discussion.
2. The Plain Dealer’s Metro blog says that Cleveland State Univ. and University of Akron may merge. Pho? Kyle et al? Psychohorsey? Anyone else noticing the absence of Eric Fingerhut’s name from the news, yet lots of chat about consolidation etc. at the higher ed level? Have a good fast, btw, Eric.
UPDATE: Pho writes about this on 9/22/07.
3. I left this comment on Progress Ohio re: the petition to repeal SB16 (anti-strip club law) may miss ballot. As I wrote, I have one word and one word only that connotes the extent to which lawmakers will pander: implementation.
4. Consider entering or passing on this information regarding a very interesting and unique contest for 12-22 year olds called, “Scenarios USA – What’s the Real Deal?”.
5. Go vote for April Baer! She’s one of five finalists, three of whom will be named winners of the first Public Radio Talent Quest contest.
6. I can’t hyperlink everything on Brewed Fresh Daily today so please go see for yourself. Several excellent posts there.
7. More stories out now (but C-Notes and WLST citing C-Notes had it yesterday) about David Brennan’s generosity with the profits earned from public school dollars. H/t to Keith.
8. GAO goes Union. Go figure. Go government.
9. King unloads about financing Cleveland’s (or county? or whomever buys naming rights) convention center and medmart. I don’t disagree.
10. Columbia’s offering a long-form education writers (Wendy, Scott, Dave, Blue Bex – that means you!) fellowship. Eligible candidates include (so no dissing this because you’re not a traditional journalist): “candidates with a passion for education writing.” Deadline is January 31, 2008.
May everyone be inscribed in the book of life for another year.

O.J., Jena 6, NBA sexual harassment: jimi izrael as only jimi can be
Filed Under Media, Writing | 2 Comments
jimi’s style isn’t everyone’s style. And that may be a good thing. But it is never like anything else you’ll read or hear.
Today, you can hear jimi and friends discussing O.J. Simpson, the Jena 6 trial in Louisiana and sexual harassment allegations related to the New York Knicks here on today’s segment of The Barbershop.
jimi told me about this project, The Barbershop, which is done for Michel Martin‘s Tell Me More program, sometime over the summer. I haven’t figured out when it’s on locally but that’s the beauty of the Internet – you can listen at your leisure.
If you can’t wait to find out how he feels about O.J., you can read a column by him in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

LGBT group, Equality Ohio, targets Mandel, others, re: Ohio anti-discrimination bill
Filed Under Civil Rights, Government, OH24th, Ohio, Politics | 12 Comments
From the Gay People’s Chronicle:
An Ohio LGBT anti-discrimination bill that was set to be introduced this month will now be delayed until next March at the earliest.
The measure, dubbed the Equal Housing and Employment Act, would add sexual orientation and gender identity wherever other protected classes are now listed in the Ohio Revised Code, such as race, religion, and national origin.
It will be similar to bills introduced in 2003 and 2005 by then-State Rep. Dale Miller, a Cleveland Democrat who is now in the Ohio Senate.
Initially, the measure was to have been introduced when the House returned from summer recess on September 11. But that timetable has changed, says State Rep. Dan Stewart of Columbus, who is expected to be its sponsor, and the bill’s main advocacy group Equality Ohio.
The delay will allow proponents to find sponsors for the measure in both parties.
[snip]
The group [Equality Ohio] will also hold town hall meetings in key legislative districts, including those of newly-elected moderate Republicans Kevin Bacon of Minerva Park and Josh Mandel of Lyndhurst, and that of House Speaker Jon Husted of Kettering. The three represent areas near Columbus, Cleveland and Dayton, respectively.
The article has many more details about the strategy.
Hmm – so, where in the 24th district might they want to have that town meeting? Fly on the wall time.
