1. Deja vu all over again.

2. I would like to hear Democratic candidate for OH-14, Bill O’Neill’s opinion on Steve LaTourette’s move to join this bipartisan group allegedly saying enough is enough.

3.  Speaking of candidate O’Neill, Yellow Dog Sammy provides good info on an upcoming fundraiser (this weekend) for the former judge.

4. The PD wants you to tell their editors that they’re full of…well, something like that for a new blog they have called Post & Riposte. (Gmillner is Gloria Millner, the PD’s op-ed page editor.)

5. Speaking of new PD blogs, here are my posts so far on Wide Open:

Working Mother’s 2007 100 Best Companies list is out. (Read here for what “best” means to them.)

The two Ohio companies, neither of which made the top 10, are American Electric Power in Columbus and TriHealth Bethesda North Good Samaritan in Cincinnati.

You can peruse the list several ways if you visit here first. This page features a left-hand sidebar that includes a list of “the best” law firms (none in Ohio although a couple with satellites here), small companies (A Child’s Waiting Adoption Program in Akron, National Affordable Housing Trust in Columbus, Noble-Davis Consulting in Solon) and companies for multicultural women (American Electric Power and P & G in Cincy).

NewsNet5 has this alpha list with states noted too.

So – how does Ohio this year stack up to Ohio last year?

Stagnant.

I wrote about the 2006 selections here.  There were only two from Ohio then also – AEP and P & G, which has now fallen off the master 100 list and only landed on the list for multicultural women.

Whatever happen to learning from the best practices of others, or – is it Working Mother’s methodology? or both?

Here’s the announcement, here’s an overview of all recipients and here’s a list of the MacArthur Fellows 2007 by domain and area.

Here’s an NPR piece on one recipient, Jonathan Shay, who is “a psychiatrist who helps heal combat veterans with post traumatic stress disorder by talking about the mythological Greek warriors Achilles and Odysseus.”

Think the Pentagon will be asking for his services?

Here’s the U.S. Department of Defense’s announcement. A link to the report is at the bottom or you can download the pdf from here.

The mental health plan is based on recommendations made to the DOD earlier this summer but they are not mandatory and currently no laws exist to enforce that the recommendations be followed.

So far, there’s been almost no news coverage of the DOD’s announcement but I did find this blurb from U.S. News and World Report:

The report lays out a “road map for change” in an effort to “put psychological health and fitness on an equal footing with physical health and fitness.” The recommendations address findings from a report released earlier this year that found that troops going to war face increasing levels of anxiety and depression with each successive deployment, with shorter “dwell times,” or times at home with their families.

“We recognize that the Global War on Terror has raised questions about the adequacy of psychological health services … established by DOD during the Cold War era,” the report notes. “We accept the responsibility to make changes needed to provide the highest possible level of care and support to our military community.”

The recommendations range from plans for a public education campaign to dispel the stigma of mental-health care (the first of the report’s 95 recommendations) to a suggestion for how better to integrate mental-health professionals into primary-care settings such as clinics. The DOD aims to complete most of the recommendations by May 2008.

Group therapy, folks. Group therapy – for the entire population.

From the latest Gallup Poll:

Public attitudes toward the two major political parties have not changed much in recent months. That’s good news for the Democratic Party, which moved into a superior image position when compared to the Republican Party more than a year ago. Americans not only continue to view the Democratic Party more favorably than the Republican Party in general terms, but they also choose the Democratic party as the preferred party for maintaining the nation’s economic prosperity. And, in a departure from recent history, Americans see the Democrats as the political party better able to protect the country from terrorism.

[my emphasis]

Favorable Ratings, Dem v. Rep Party

Bad news: “The recent gain in the Democratic Party’s image advantage is due primarily to a sharp decline in Americans’ favorable perceptions of the Republican Party more than an improvement in the public’s perception of the Democrats.”

Eh. Not really so bad though.

Is this offer even tempting?

During the promotion, Starbucks will pick an artist each day and provide its customers with a complimentary download card that can be redeemed through the end of the year at the iTunes store. Some of the other artists are Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, Bebel Gilberto, Annie Lennox and Keith Urban.

Lombard declined to say how many cards would be available at each Starbucks store, but he said the company would “make sure every store has more than enough cards to provide to customers.”

The giveaway begins the same day Starbucks will offer a new service at its Seattle and New York stores that lets customers buy music through their iPhones, Apple’s new iPod Touch or a laptop via a free wireless Internet connection. Starbucks also is rolling out a “Now Playing” feature, which allows customers to instantly download and buy the music being played in the store. Those services will be expanded to other markets later this year and into 2008.

Start date is Tuesday, October 2 and the last day will be Wednesday, November 7.

You can read more here about the Starbucks-Apple partnership.

You could always say you’re just trying to keep the company honest.

The AP now has a newstory about the British blogs that were taken offline by a host who was told that the allegedly offending blog had defamatory content.  Even the blog of a London mayoral candidate disappeared by accident because his blog is on the server of the alleged offender. But otherwise, still little news coverage beyond the blogs.

Are the blogs Spartacus?
