Remains of the Day, 10-08-07
Filed Under Remains of the Day | 10 Comments
1. I figured out how to do a favicon but now you can’t even really see it. Pfffft.
2. Norm Roulet writes about what I think is a pretty scary experience. It reminds me of a situation when I was in Italy and was with a friend from Rome and we were sitting at a Wendy’s waiting for a train and took a couple of pictures with some Arab-speaking men. When they realized we had the pictures, they demanded we give them the film. Just two weeks beforehand had been the Athens plane hijacking (which happened two days before I left Israel after having been there for a year, a year during which there had been absolutely no such incidents, I might add) and about three months before the Achille Lauro. It was a tense time in Europe and we didn’t hesitate to hand it over. But it was a weird exchange.
Anyway, Norm, okay – I was thinking of Melissa Etheridge’s album title, Brave and Crazy as I read what you wrote, except I couldn’t remember that it was “crazy” and kept thinking “stupid” except I’ve met you so, well, we know you are not a stupid person. How about crazy?
Good luck in any case.
3. Okay. Yeah. Umm, I’d be angry too.
4. Okay – I need to reprint most of this item:
An Israeli Arab is the father of 67 children, a national record.
Shehade Abu Arad has been recognized by the Interior Ministry as Israel’s top breeder after he registered 67 children that he had with his eight wives, Yediot Achronot reported Monday.
Abu Arad, 58, lives in the central Israeli village of Burgata. The runner-up in the reproduction ranking is another Israeli Arab who has 39 children from four wives, according to Yediot.
Give that man a cigar, or a peace pipe. Or, diapers.

Lotteries are bad bets for school financing plans
Happy Birthday Dear Dennis, Happy Birthday to me
If it is broke, who fixes it? (Cleveland’s school buses in sorry shape)
I already cross-posted today the entries on the Cleveland 365 wine event needing some legislative primer instruction and my panel appearance at the Bliss Institute’s Making Democracy Happen event this Thursday night.

“With Margaret Bernstein” The Bond arrives
Filed Under Announcements, Cleveland+, Culture, Women | Comments Off
Margaret’s going to hate me for this, but at least I didn’t post it on Wide Open, you know! NOT that I didn’t think about it, mind you.
Margaret Bernstein is a long-time Plain Dealer writer who got me started on the path that’s led to where I am now (thank her or curse her). And now, her first book is out, The Bond: Three Young Men Learn to Forgive and Reconnect with Their Fathers. Although it actually looks as though only the audio portions are out? And the book release is on November 1?
You can read any one of these stories about the book, and here’s the PD’s item and a USA Today piece too.
Congratulations, Margaret. I’m so proud of you, and to know you.

The Iowa Poll shows 29 percent of likely caucusgoers preferring Clinton, a New York senator, an improvement from the Register’s most recent poll in May.
Clinton’s gain comes after a summer of campaigning in Iowa that included two trips with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and major policy speeches about Iraq and health care.
The new poll also shows Clinton picking up support while Edwards and Obama have sharpened their criticism of her.
The poll shows all other candidates falling farther behind the top three, despite regular Iowa campaigning by several of the others.
The article on the webpage has some good interactive graphics with more info. MOE sounds high at 4.9.

Bliss Institute’s Making Democracy Happen at capacity, 10/11-12/07
Filed Under Announcements, Blogging, Elections, Government, Media, Ohio, Politics, Writing | 2 Comments
Even if it isn’t the season we thought it was supposed to be, with red and orange leaves fluttering through cool breezes while you pick apples or pumpkins, signs that it is the political season will be very evident this Thursday and Friday, October 11 and 12, at the University of Akron’s Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. The Institute is hosting Making Democracy Happen, as part of the Academic Outreach Conference series for the American Association of Political Consultants.
The Academic Outreach Conference provides a forum for students, academics, and consultants to discuss professional political consulting and public affairs. Career trends, technical expertise, and ethical issues are explored throughout the conference.
A mentoring program will be implemented at the conference to connect students with professionals who will provide career advice and guidance.
Familiar names that will be in attendance include Gerald Austin, Alan Melamed and Whit Ayres.
Oh – and me. I’m on the opening night panel, called News, Bloggers and New Media in 2008 Ohio, with Joe Hallett of the Columbus Dispatch and Bill Hershey of the Dayton Daily New. Professor John Green will be moderating.
Any messages you think the audience should know that I might miss?

Wine events to include legislative primer?
Filed Under Business, Government, Ohio, Politics, Statehouse | 1 Comment
Cleveland365.com in partnership with American Family Insurance is proud to launch One World Un-Corked, A Wine Tasting & Education. Being held at one of Cleveland’s most exclusive venues, The Ritz-Carlton. This event brings together professionals & trendsetters, who have expressed an interest in enhancing their knowledge of Wine and different World Cultures.
One World Un-Corked will provide attendees exposure to wines from different regions of the World. This event will feature Wines from Italy, California & Ohio.
Think they’ll find room for How a Bill Becomes a Law the Chair of the Committee Didn’t Really Follow Closely Enough 101:
Wine education topics will include:
· Wine Etiquette
· Wine Pairing
· Corking
· Swirl and Smell
· Wine Types
· Wine Storage
Maybe they should invite State Rep. Matt Dolan (R, 98th) and State Sens. Tim Grendell (R, 18th) and Jeff Jacobson (R, 6th).

[Update x1] 20 y.o. deputy sheriff kills six adolescents for being dumped?
Filed Under Crime | 3 Comments
Update: So he worked for Forest County’s sheriff dept. supposedly. But as of 1pm today, he’s not listed. The sheriff is elected but it does not appear that the others are. It also appears that two men who are related are the sheriff and the chief deputy sheriff.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel seems to be the best source at the moment, though still I’ve seen nothing on deputy sheriff minimum qualifications – like…age?
More about Crandon from the town’s homepage.
I don’t care what size town you live in, how does this happen:
Sunday morning’s shootings have left the small, logging community in disbelief. Among the hardest details to digest is the fact that the shooter was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who also worked part-time as a Crandon police officer.
David Franz, 36, who lives with his wife two houses from the duplex where the shooting occurred, said it was hard to accept that someone in law enforcement was the gunman.
“The first statement we said to each other was, how did he get through the system?” Franz said. “How do they know somebody’s background, especially that young? It is disturbing, to say the least.”
There’s supposed to be a press conference this morning.
Blognetnews Wisconsin might be another place to keep track of what’s going on – especially on how it is that a 20 year old can be a deputy sheriff in Crandon.
