Update: So he worked for Forest County’s sheriff dept. supposedly. But as of 1pm today, he’s not listed.  The sheriff is elected but it does not appear that the others are.  It also appears that two men who are related are the sheriff and the chief deputy sheriff.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel seems to be the best source at the moment, though still I’ve seen nothing on deputy sheriff minimum qualifications – like…age?

More about Crandon from the town’s homepage.

I don’t care what size town you live in, how does this happen:

Sunday morning’s shootings have left the small, logging community in disbelief. Among the hardest details to digest is the fact that the shooter was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who also worked part-time as a Crandon police officer.

David Franz, 36, who lives with his wife two houses from the duplex where the shooting occurred, said it was hard to accept that someone in law enforcement was the gunman.

“The first statement we said to each other was, how did he get through the system?” Franz said. “How do they know somebody’s background, especially that young? It is disturbing, to say the least.”

There’s supposed to be a press conference this morning.

MSNBC has many details.

Blognetnews Wisconsin might be another place to keep track of what’s going on – especially on how it is that a 20 year old can be a deputy sheriff in Crandon.

    Shalom Jill,

When I was this deputy’s age, I was babysitting eight thermonuclear missiles. What he did cannot be explained by his age.

Twenty is more than old enough to be a responsible citizen and keeper of the peace.

We have to look elsewhere here for an explanation; like how was this man selected for this job?

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

Now, Jeff – you make a good point, but I see a different one as well: maturation is a variable thing and some 20 year olds are more capable of being deputy sheriffs than other 20 year olds. I’m not taking myself off the hook THAT easily.

But yes – I’d probably prefer my 13 year old to be a deputy sheriff than some adults.

Nothing has come out yet re: job selection.

Thanks for keeping me honest, seriously. :)
