The official announcement is here.  It’s an important number for freelancers, among other kinds of workers.  A little hard to believe it’s only going up 1.5 cents but I have never studied the methodology or logic behind the rate’s computation.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 50.5 cents per mile for business miles driven;
  • 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The new rate for business miles compares to a rate of 48.5 cents per mile for 2007. The new rate for medical and moving purposes compares to 20 cents in 2007. The rate for miles driven in service of charitable organizations has remained the same.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile; the standard rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs as determined by the same study. Runzheimer International, an independent contractor, conducted the study for the IRS.

Runzheimer has a code of ethics you can find here. I couldn’t find a list of officers or board members.  I’m just curious.

Rex Runzheimer joined Runzheimer International in 1987, became President in 1994, and purchased the company and became sole owner in 2001. (link , p.4)

A little more information is available with a bit of Googling, e.g., Greg Harper is President, Heidi Skatrud is VP–Market Development.

    Thank you!

I was juggling dinner and three kids’ homework plus googling the company and navigating its site. I didn’t go past the first page of google results with the words “runzheimer international” – you got me.

Oh – hey – wait! You found it in a pdf – that doesn’t count as “with a bit of Googling”! That requires a whole nother application – unless you want to wade through the html version… ;)

Actually, it was a bit of Googling. The ethics code page you cited lists Rex Runzheimer as chairman and CEO. So, I Googled using:
    site:www.runzheimer.com “Rex Runzheimer”

Voila! The fourth Google result consists of the line: “Rex Runzheimer joined Runzheimer International in 1987, became President in 1994, and purchased the company and became sole owner in 2001.” I brought up Google’s HTML version of the PDF page and “Rex Runzheimer” was highlighted in yellow, which I found in about five seconds. I then doublechecked the PDF, which also names the Marketing VP.

Ah – but were you feeding two children, folding laundry, checking homework and answering the phone at the same time!?

There must be some official Google-Off contest somewhere in cyberspace.

I definitely was not feeding two children, etc. I just like to Google, finding obscure facts–challenge of the hunt and all that.

Hmmm – well – I don’t have much to go on with your “anon” email. And it’s nearly bedtime. I’ll have to work that hunt another day. :)

Is the study available to the public? I’m currently doing research on the fixed and variable cost of operating a vehicle and am intererested in the % of total cost that variable cost play.

    thanks
