Wow.  I missed this. Evel Knievel was only 69.

Talk about icons of the 1970s.  I remember sitting down with my brothers to watch that guy, every single time he was on.  Reality TV, circa 1970s.

    Shalom Jill,

If my friends and my parents only knew the jumps we created for our bicycles/mini-bikes/motorcycles and how often we came this close to breaking our necks, they have had gray hair a lot earlier.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

Yeah – in our neighborhood here in Ohio we had a kid who, with others, had built some serious ramps etc and the kid, when he was 15 – he’s in college now – had a terrible accident in the woods on the ramps. Stitches, concussion, facial cosmetic surgery – it was not nice.

There are some brains, how they work and think, I will never understand.

I missed it even more than you Jill.
I thought he was already dead.

RIP, oh icon of my own ramp-building-Schwinn Sting-Ray-jumping childhood.

Scott – I think we need to do some kind of tribute post with photos of you, Jeff and whomever else didn’t die trying to emulate Evel. What do you think? George would never host it but Wom and Have Coffee maybe…

    Shalom Jill,

Oo! Oo! Can I bring my chopper mini-bike up from Marietta?

(I need to scan a picture in.)

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

LOL I didn’t think he was dead, but I admit to not thinking much about him the last few years lol. When I read he had died, I thought 69 is young chronologically but he was very lucky to have made it to 69 :-)

Cute, Carole. :) He is one of those you think, didn’t he die yet? lol in the “he is a daredevil kind of guy” way – not a morbid way.

But yes – I agree – he is lucky he made it to 69. I suppose he just loved what he did but I think, what a life! lol

Isn’t there some psychological theory that there are ‘extreme’ people because they need that extreme high and it’s the only way to get it…climbing buildings or jumping over tons of motorcycles. I wanna see all the photos of the above commenters doing similar ‘projects!’ :-) Some guy on Letterman about a month ago did a summersault and careened over a bunch of cars or taxis, I can’t remember. He also hit the last car with some part of his body and I felt the pain even though he smiled at the end LOL

Okay, my husband was riveted by The History Channel special on him over the weekend. He was Evel Knievel for Halloween several times.

He was describing the toy — you know, the one by Ideal with the crank to get the motorcycle going and then it jumps the camper? (We found pieces of it in the attic when we were moving his mom out of their childhood home.)

Anyway, now my 8 year old wants one for Christmas. When we tried to explain that it’s an old toy (probably available for thousands on eBay), he said that’s okay Santa can still make one. Oy!

We were remembering these stunts as huge TV events, not to be missed. The Snake River jump was on my birthday! Who does this stuff today?

Carole – oh, absolutely. When I did my field placement in the juvie court diagnostic clinic and we would talk about risky behavior – why kids pursue it and so on, that element of the high produced was key.

The thing is, once you are an adult, there’s some moderation – the id, ego, superego or whichever paradigm one might use – that’s supposed to occur, to protect and keep the survival instinct going. One might argue that those most involved with the most extreme have some other kind of wiring/need going on.

Okay – Wendy – there are just so many things wrong with that!! :) Teasing.

My brother had the same toy. :)

Who does this stuff today? Good question – isn’t the reality tv people – what’s the one where they make people eat worms or whatever? But it’s still different – you really felt that Evel wanted to do it just because – it wasn’t a dare. That’s a big difference then doing it for the money I think.
