I haven’t read or heard a word about who might be running to replace my term-limited State Senator, Bob Spada (R-24). Here’s the last batch of posts about the possibilities. The most recent news was on 9/13, almost three months ago.

And the primary is in March?

Someone knows something somewhere. Come out, come out whereever you are.

Update: Thanks to Greg Helms’ comment below, I’ve tracked down this great post by Jeff Coryell from 8/06 about his sit down with John M. Celebrezze, whom Greg says below has pulled petitions to run for Bob Spada’s state senate seat for District 24.

Blogs.  They can be so helpful.

This list should give you everything you need to know.

    http://www.boe.cuyahogacounty.us./pdf/2008Election/2008_candidates.pdf

As of 11/29/07, the only person who has pulled is John Celebrezze (who lost to Patton in the ’06 elections).

Thanks Greg – I updated the entry and linked to a nice piece Jeff Coryell wrote about John.

It says that John W. Celebrezze is running (?) for the 24th state senate seat and that John M. Celebrezze is running for the 18th state house seat. The address/phone number is the same for both lines even if the middle initial is different.

Also, I question the use of the filed and valid columns. I presume “Filed” is when the candidate files his or her petitions and valid is “Yes” if they have been checked for valid signatures.

Looking at John Mandel’s line, it looks like petitions were filed on 8/3 and they have already been marked as valid. Now I can see filing them early, but I seriously question whether a BOE would check signatures before the filing date. That isn’t how its done in my county (Franklin)

Hi Paul – Josh Mandel is in Iraq right now, that’s why he pulled so early I think. He’s the sitting state rep for the 17th. Are you saying he pulled for the 24th too or instead of?

As for Celebrezze, he ran and lost against Patton for the 18th last November (2006).

I don’t know if there is a John W! I suppose there could be – I haven’t googled that yet.

    Anyone else?

The PDF linked by Greg appears to be people who have filed for 2008 office, so it appears that John Celebrezze has filed for both offices by the BOE’s imprecisely defined criteria (not allowed, so I presume it’s a clerical screw up).

As for Josh, my point wasn’t when he filed his petition signatures, but when they were checked. He (and others on the list) shouldn’t get preferential treatment.

However, it’s possible that the rules about when signatures are checked are different from county to county.

I know of a candidate who filed their signatures for the 2006 race late in October 2005 and was warned by the Franklin County BOE that the signatures wouldn’t be checked until a week or two after the filing deadline which at that time was February 16, 2006 and that this person was running a risk of turning their signatures in so soon.

Ah – thank you for clarifying (and checking). :) I started saying that I don’t turn down help after my third child was born and so, in that vein, I do appreciate when readers help out.

So – is Josh pulled for both the state senate and the rep position??

    Some points of clarification.

These are people who have pulled petitions, so that’s why you have some people pulling for multiple races (such as James Satola for numerous judgeships). If there’s a date listed in the filed column, that’s the date those petitions were actually filed. If there’s a date in the valid column, that’s the date the BOE found the signatures to be valid.

The Cuyahoga County BOE, I believe, checks the signatures once the petitions are filed (hence why Josh’s are listed in August or Kathleen Keough’s for probate court were filed and found valid in late September).

It’s not Josh but John celebrezze that appears on this report twice.

Tx Greg and Paul (confession – still not sure what Mandel is pulled for but I believe earlier this year it was written up as being state rep – I think I noted it too).

Josh is only there for the 17th state house district.

Much of this is getting out of date, by the way, since petition forms are now available on the Internets. I and two of my clients are using downloaded forms and never went to a BOE to “pull” petitions.
