I couldn’t attend this evening’s Meet the Bloggers with Cleveland City Councilman and Democratic primary candidate for the 10th congressional district, Joe Cimperman. But Carole very kindly wrote up the experience here.

I don’t see a reference to answers that correspond to the questions I’d wanted asked of Cimperman, but Carole was only doing a round-up. I look forward to listening to the audio at a later date, once it’s posted.

Thanks to George and all the attendees, not least of whom is Mr. Cimperman himself.

Maybe Hillary Clinton’s idea about blanketing the government with blogs isn’t so bad after all. According to Wired Threat Level:

On Monday, fliers asked the TSA’s [Transportation Security Administration] new blog Evolution of Security why some airports were requiring passengers to remove all electronics – MP3 players, cell phones and even power cords – from their carry-on bags. So the first name-only bloggers at TSA looked into it, figured out it was local rogue offices and shut down the policy.

These practices were stopped on Monday afternoon and blackberrys, cords and iPods began to flow through checkpoints like the booze was flowing on Bourbon Street Tuesday night. (Fat Tuesday of course).

So thanks to everyone for asking about this and for giving us a chance to make it right. Our hope is that examples like this validate our forum….

Though less than a week old, the TSA blog has gotten thousands of comments, ranging from diatribes about the liquid ban to calls for government-provided booties for travelers to wear when their shoes are being x-rayed.

This action by the TSA means that someone who cared read the blog, checked out what was behind the comments and then got enough or had enough authority to get the policy changed.

That’s pretty cool. Now, if only those TSA bloggers could learn to spell “blogosphere.”  Seriously, though – check out the TSA blog. I kind of like it.

Many thanks to Jackie Shafer, Production Manager at The Ohio Channel for sending me this link to the video archive of Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s State of the State address.

Sigh of relief.  I look forward to watching it later this evening.

At Meet the Bloggers. You can read more about it here but the vitals are:

Wednesday, February 6, 2008
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Gypsy Beans and Baking Company
6425 Detroit Avenue

Cleveland, Ohio 44102

Longtime Councilman Joe Cimperman will sit down with Meet The Bloggers in the heart of the 10th Congressional District to discuss his decision to enter the race, the issues of his platform, and how his decision affects Ward 13 in the city.

As usual, this conversation will prove to be a lively and interesting talk around the table. Please put the event on your calendar and join us. Your participation adds depth and perspective not there when you aren’t. If you can’t make it, send us an email with your questions.

I’m unable to attend* the session but I’ve e-mailed George Nemeth two questions for the councilman.

*I really thought, two weeks ago, how could I not be well enough to get to the Cimperman MTB? That it was a must-go-to event for me, my return to normalcy and all things MTB (which I love). But, by way of this post, I will follow up my pity party by saying the following:

1. I’ve been able to be out of bed for several hours a day (while on meds and after a lengthy time on a heating pad) but I’m still only getting outside the house a little because I still have significant pain…

2. which is because, tada, I learned today that I do indeed have a herniated disk (the MRI scan showed it, and, lucky me, the radiologist also found an ovarian cyst! Fortunately, I have my annual ob/gyn scheduled for next week and we can figure out what that’s all about then. If this all comes as TMI, just consider: even my younger brother wrote me back, and I quote, “Thanks, but what I really want to hear about is your colonoscopy!” Sorry. Next time.).

3. Friday, I go in for a cortisone injection. Given the fact that I nearly died from freaking out over getting an epidural when I had my kids, I’m really so excited for Friday to arrive. I bet you can feel the thrill just from reading my words.

The good news of course is that this is all treatable and it shows that I’m in fact…human. Who knew?

Hello? Ohio wonks? Don’t forget, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland will address Ohioans today in his State of the State address.

You should be able to watch it at ONN (Ohio News Now).

You can listen on WCPN.

Lots of articles covering it, the lede being about support for early college programs.

From Ohio.com:

College credit could be within reach of more Ohioans despite the state’s lagging economy under a plan Gov. Ted Strickland was expected to discuss during his second State of the State speech Wednesday.

Expanding a program that allows students to earn high school and college credit at the same time is among initiatives Strickland will mention in the address scheduled to begin at noon, said sources speaking on condition of anonymity because of their relationships with the governor.

Governors’ proposals to expand programs that allow high school seniors to get 12th-grade and college credit simultaneously have often been welcomed, however, as U.S. states seek advantage in an increasingly competitive global market.

Karla Carruthers, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Education, said 12,200 students are enrolled in the state’s program _ only a slight increase over the 10,000 former Gov. Bob Taft touted in his 2005 State of the State speech.

The difficulty with such programs is determining how to distribute the money _ whether to the high school or the college where the student attends, or both, said Ohio Board of Regents spokesman Michael Chaney.

“Who gets the money, and who pays for what, is really what’s kept this stuff from being a very significant part of the education picture,” he said.

I’m going to stay mute on this topic because I’m covering it for a group of articles, but let’s just say that over the next few months, there will be plenty of meat put on these skeletal ideas.
