Colorado Republican legislator Liston would fit in at MSNBC
Filed Under Culture, Government, Hillary Clinton, Media, Statehouse, Women | Comments Off
…on Wednesday, Rep. Larry Liston, R-Colorado Springs, called unmarried teen parents “sluts” at a Republican caucus.
…
Liston used the derogatory term during a Republican caucus lunch on health care to express his view that unmarried teen parents are sexually promiscuous and to complain that society condones premarital sex.
“In my parents’ day and age, (unmarried teen parents) were sent away, they were shunned, they were called what they are,” Liston said at the lunch. “There was at least a sense of shame.
“There’s no sense of shame today. Society condones it … I think it’s wrong. They’re sluts.”
Liston apologized for his word choice Thursday afternoon.
“I’m definitely sorry that I ever used that word,” he told the Rocky. “I had no intention of offending anybody. That was not my intent all — never was, never has been.”
Sounds like he’d fit right in with Chris Matthews and David Shuster.

Fred Thompson endorses John McCain
Filed Under Announcements, Campaigning, Elections, John McCain, Politics, WH2008 | 2 Comments
Just the messenger. From The Trail:
Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to “close ranks” behind the presumed nominee.
“This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,” Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.
Thompson’s endorsement was expected. The two men were colleagues for years in the Senate and shared what associates called a friendship. But while he was in the race, Thompson had bristled at the idea that he was going to drop out and endorse McCain.

PD endorsed casino amendment in ’06 but blasts video games now
Filed Under Blogging, Cleveland+, Economy, Gambling, Government, Media, Ohio, Politics, Statehouse, Ted Strickland | 5 Comments
Okay. Whatever. But this kind of editorial wishy-washiness is exactly why I gave up my subscription:
Strickland is on record opposing casinos in Ohio. Our support for them has been tepid, but at least casinos generate big money for government and create thousands of jobs. Gambling machines in bars do neither. What’s more, as much as slot machines sap disposable income, they’re a wise investment compared to the odds of winning lottery-sponsored games.
In 2006, Ohio voters rejected casino gambling for the third time. But that loss can be attributed largely to the fact that proponents waged an awful campaign trying to justify a horribly crafted plan that would have simply handed casino franchises to developers and racetrack owners absent a scintilla of competition.
The ongoing proliferation of casinos in states bordering Ohio makes it increasingly likely that voters would approve a thoughtful plan that would award a few casinos to the highest bidders.
“Thoughtful” must be the operative word when it comes to any expansion of gambling in the state. And there’s nothing the least bit thoughtful about Strickland’s idea of expanding it by putting gambling machines in bars.
Of course, as we all know, you can no longer read the Plain Dealer’s Sunday, October 15, 2006 endorsement of Issue 3, aka the Ohio Learn and Earn amendment.
But here are the posts I wrote about it:
Again, whatever.
Does no one remember that the lottery commission was going to be able to get its hands on the casinos if the proper new commission didn’t get formed? And what would be difference, which commission controlled the gambling?
Why the splicing and dicing, I don’t know. Issue 3 was lousy and this lottery commission-run bar-focused video game is likewise lousy. Why can’t the PD just say that? Because it made a bad endorsement of Issue 3 and now has to CYA for it. I didn’t buy it then, I don’t buy it now and it’s why any flames thrown by traditional journalists at citizen journalists sputter to embers: no adequate transparency.

Patti Solis Doyle letter to David Plouffe on Ohio debate
Filed Under Barack Obama, Campaigning, Debates, Elections, Hillary Clinton, Ohio, Politics, Primary, WH2008 | 2 Comments
Hattip to Lynn Sweet for this post that includes the text of the e-mails sent by Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, and Barack Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe:
Dear David:
Congratulations again on your victories Tuesday night. As Senator Obama declared, it was a great evening for Democrats.
One of the things I’ve always appreciated about the Democratic Party is its willingness to engage the toughest issues facing our country, even if we don’t always agree on how best to solve them.
After seven years of a Bush administration that has left the economy struggling and our health care system in crisis, Americans are certainly facing their fair share of challenges and deserve to hear how the candidates for the nomination will address them.
As such, I was disappointed to see that Senator Obama rejected the idea of having more debates given the fact that he and Senators Clinton have had only a single one-on-one debate. I think we can do better and so does Hillary.
Senator Clinton believes voters should have more than one opportunity to see the candidates discuss the issues and has accepted five debates between now and March 4th from CNN, MSNBC, WJLA, ABC and Fox News.
To that end, we hope Senator Obama will join Senator Clinton for a debate a week beginning this weekend. I’m sure we can find a suitable place to meet on the campaign trail. There’s too much at stake and the issues facing the country are too grave to deny voters the opportunity to see the candidates up close.
As Senator Obama has said, “In an era when Americans are rightfully skeptical about the quality of our politics, let us set an example [they] can be proud of and give them the kind of campaign they deserve.” We couldn’t agree more.
Sincerely,
Patti Solis Doyle
Campaign Manager

Cleveland State president comments on Clinton – Obama debate
Filed Under Barack Obama, Campaigning, Cleveland+, Debates, Hillary Clinton, Ohio, Politics, Primary, WH2008 | 18 Comments
From NBC’s Cleveland affiliate, WKYC:
Dr. Michael Schwartz, Cleveland State University President, said the University was contacted Thursday. They were asked to accomodate the event and are very, very glad.
President Schwartz said: “this is very important for Cleveland. It matters for the University a great deal as well. We will do anything we can to promote this region.”
He also believes this is a great opportunity to bring area school kids as well as Cleveland State Students together for this history-making event. He went on to say, “It is a critical issue for us. CSU is an educational institution. It is a wonderful opportunity.”
I would expect John Edwards’ beseeching of the candidates to pay attention to poverty also had a hand in Cleveland being chosen, given the focus the city has garnered, fair or not, related to its relative status among metropolitan cities with large populations that face serious, chronic issues of poverty.
Lots of interesting questions about the attention that CSU will garner also, in light of higher education plans for collapsing the number of public higher ed institutions. Oh – so much to think about.

AIPAC & Josh Mandel at odds
Filed Under Foreign Affairs, Government, Military, Ohio, Politics, Statehouse | 5 Comments
That’s what this article about states taking on divestment at the legislative level indicates:
Josh Mandel is a first-term legislator in the State of Ohio’s House of Representatives. He is also a US Marine Corps sergeant in reserves. Last year, Mandel arrived at the state house after a tour of duty in Iraq. There, he saw first-hand how Iran was fuelling the insurgency that is killing his fellow servicemen and Iraqi innocents. His experience led him to introduce a bill that would divest Ohio’s public employee pension funds from companies that do business with Iran and fellow state sponsor of terror Sudan.
As his bill made its way through the various committees, Mandel’s initiative received a body blow from an unexpected direction. AIPAC representatives approached him and asked him to pare down his bill’s divestment requirements to include only companies that invest more than $20 million in Iran’s oil and gas sector.
Mandel was surprised. Why should companies that invest in Iran’s defense, telecommunications and other sectors be immune from divestment? AIPAC went over his head to Ohio’s House Speaker Jon Hustead. Hustead amended the bill along AIPAC’s suggested lines.
I wasn’t aware that AIPAC was involved in the paring down. The Ohio MSM – that gets credentialed to follow our legislature – always portrayed the watering down and eventual tabling of the bill (HB 151) as being a result of concerns of other Ohio legislators, the parties to be affected and the need to include Sudan. So this influence from AIPAC is news to me.
Guess I should be checking to see if Josh is getting any political contributions from AIPAC for this year’s race for his seat, which is against Democrat and lawyer, Rob Belovich (who I’m told by two sources I trust is very impressive).

Folks wishing to cover the Cleveland debates will be credentialed by…?
Filed Under Barack Obama, Blogging, Campaigning, Debates, Elections, Hillary Clinton, Media, Ohio, Politics, Primary, WH2008 | 4 Comments
This pdf indicates that NBC directed people to get press credentials from the Florida Press Association for the Florida Atlantic University GOP debate through an online application process.
But here, NBC had Drexel University’s Office of University Relations be in charge.
Now, we have a Cleveland Press Club, but I don’t know if they’ll be involved. If they are, don’t you just know poor George Nemeth is going to be swamped more than usual with new social networking friend?
Here’s the original post about the Democratic primary debates coming to Cleveland State University on Saturday, February 26, in case you missed it.
If I learn anything, I’ll write like I hear.
