It’s not as much superficial as it is emotional - Drew Westen and all.

Well, I think you'll agree that my analysis was superficial. If you wish to characterize the response of certain (many?) voters as primarily emotional, I can go along with that. (I might argue that the decision-making processes of many emotion-driven voters are intellectually superficial, but I don't think that detracts from your point.)

I think that ANON is on to something here, Jill. During the debate on Tuesday when I liveblogged for the first time, for the first half hour people complained that too much time was being spent on each topic. As that scenario continued, the commenters changed focus from issues to personalities and demeanor. Hillary received most of the critical comments, rude, shrill, "we get it-move on" All words that my daughters used with me as they were growing up. On the other hand, their grandpa could do no wrong. They laughed at his jokes, gave him hugs, and wanted to be with him.

To me, the emotional aspect was something new. I have been one to try to stick to issues, but when candidates are so close in outlook, I think that demeanor becomes a factor.

I don't Anon - you don't think McCain will get the young women who are attracted to men just like their father? (that's a joke)

It's not as much superficial as it is emotional - Drew Westen and all.

-the biggest shocker to me and I’d love to hear other people’s interpretations of this: young voters, 18-29, go for McCain 61% to 39%, whereas when McCain is against Obama, this demographic goes for Obama 52%-47% over McCain.

Let's suppose you're twenty-something and your choices remind you of a hero grandpa and a shrill stepmother. Who do you vote for?

Suppose your choices are instead a hero grandpa and a cool uncle. Who do you vote for now?

(Is this a superficial analysis? Definitely. But lots of voters are superficial.)
