From the Gay People’s Chronicle:

In the most contentious race the groups looked at for the March 4 primary, the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats had to choose between one of the LGBT community’s most reliable friends in the House of Representatives and one of its closest friends in Cleveland City Council.

In the end, the group gave its nod to 10th District incumbent Rep. Dennis Kucinich at its February 21 meeting.

Kucinich reminded the Stonewall Democrats of his perfect voting record on LGBT issues and his advocacy on behalf of equality.

“I brought the issue of marriage equality to two presidential campaigns,” Kucinich said. “No one else has done that.”

Among the Stonewall members, Cimperman backers cited his pro-LGBT record on city council, including the conversations he is having on domestic partner benefits for city employees, and their strong personal relationships with him.

Cimperman’s backers lobbied hard to get the endorsement for their candidate, which requires a vote of sixty percent of the membership.

After 40 minutes of debate, the group chose to endorse Kucinich.

Other endorsements:

The Cleveland Stonewall Democrats also endorsed Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Stuart Friedman for a seat on the Eighth District Ohio Court of Appeals.

The Stonewall Democrats of Summit County endorsed Judge William O’Neill for U.S. House of Representatives in the 14th District.

The group also endorsed Russell Pry for Summit County Executive, Mary Margaret Rowlands for Summit County Common Pleas Judge, and the Metro-SCAT public transportation levy.

The Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio endorsed in two U.S. House races.

In the 12th District, the group endorsed its former president, Russ Goodwin, who is Ohio’s only openly gay U.S. House candidate.

In the neighboring 15th district, the group endorsed longtime LGBT ally Mary Jo Kilroy, who is currently a Franklin County commissioner.

None of the Log Cabin Republican groups in Ohio made primary endorsements.

I’ve exchanged e-mails with guest post writer, Ashley, before.  But today, she left a comment in this thread that she’s letting me post here as a guest post.  Since I’ve never been a Hillary supporter, I definitely can’t make the case for her.  I thought it might liven things up to have Ashley’s comment bumped up.

I don’t know if this thread is still active but I missed some of the responses and was wondering – are any Ohio voters reading this still undecided? I’d be happy to join a discussion about “Why Hillary!”.

To start, as a medical student and future physician, I’m concerned with healthcare as the number one issue. Hillary STARTED the fight on healthcare. She has experience with the insurance companies and her plan is all inclusive. All plans start big and are whittled down in committee before the vote and before any sort of laws take effect. Hillary is right when she says Democrats must start from a perspective of covering EVERYONE or it won’t get done.

Secondly, I know the experience thing has been played up in this election, but it’s seriously the one thing that all the separate issues boil down to. Hillary is tested, and she’s ready to lead. There’s no learning curve involved. She’s the only person that I feel is fit to take the reins and fix issues both here at home, and around the world. She’s the BEST suited to help America regain it’s popular standing on the world stage.

She has the BEST most efficient and humane plan to remove troops from iraq, starting within the first 60 days of her presidency.

She has a plan to reduce child poverty. As many know, children (ages 18 and under) are the group most adversely afffected by poverty in this country. Her plan includes nurse visits for pregnant mothers (as a med student i can speak up for the importance of prenatal care) and also includes ensuring a nationwide pre-K program. Not only does she outline this plan in detail, but, as with ALL her proposed plans, she outlines how she will PAY for it, which is something sorely lacking from the Obama campaign.

She has a plan to use “green collar jobs” to both help our economy by building jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

She is the smartest, most prepared candidate I have seen in my lifetime. Let’s just say that being the first woman president wouldn’t be the only history-making event of her time as commander in chief. It takes knowledge of the levers of Washington to actually make change happen. I am surprised both by my party and especially by my generation – I am shocked that people are moved by rhetoric and speeches without knowing what’s behind it. I am shocked to learn that most people I talk to who support Obama support him because they ‘like him” – based on his charisma and his oratory. But what they CAN’T do is tell me HOW he would bring about the CHANGE he touts so proudly. And if they can, it’s nothing different than anything Hillary would do, and she’d do it more efficiently, and more completely.

In a time when Democrats are looking to take the reins, Hillary Clinton is our girl. This is a no brainer to me. But if people still have questions, as always, I’m open.

Now, if we’re talking about powerful imagery, and we all know that we’ve seen our share of images on the front pages of newspapers that we wish weren’t there – either because we wish those incidents weren’t happening, we don’t want to be reminded or the picture is simply horrific, then someone please explain to me why there is an enormous image of men’s dress shoes on the front of the New York Times? The article is titled, “Bernanke says sagging growth is chief concern.”

Is the point that the men wearing the shoes won’t be able to get those shoes shiny anymore unless they shine them themselves from now on?  What?

Sigh.  Remember this one that was also on the front page of the Times? The front page editor must have a shoe fetish or something.

From the Cleveland Free Times:

State of the City Address

Hopefully Mayor Frank Jackson will share the urgency many Clevelanders feel when he delivers the State of the City address at 12:20 p.m. today at the Crown Plaza Hotel (777 St. Clair Ave.) sponsored by the City Club of Cleveland. The annual event allows the mayor to tell us what’s going right and what’s going wrong in Cleveland and what he plans to do about the latter. The event is sold out, but it will be broadcast live on channels 3 and 5 and WCPN-FM 90.3.

You can listen to it live here or go to WCPN, here, when you want to listen at your convenience later.

According to the press release from the mayor’s office:

[the address is] entitled “Confronting our Reality Head On: Turning Challenges into Opportunities” [and] will focus on the City’s finances and operations; creating an attractive investment environment; strengthening our regional economy; improving public safety; and education and opportunities for our young people.

I’ll have to listen later and/or read a transcript when one becomes available.
