What were you saying about talks? About Hamas not wanting the Israelis dead and gone?

A gunman infiltrated a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem and opened fire in a library Thursday night, killing at least seven people, officials said. Police commander Aharon Franco told reporters at the scene that “an Israeli army officer nearby” then shot the gunman dead.

In Gaza, the Islamic militant Hamas praised the attack but stopped short of claiming responsibility. Thousands poured into the streets to celebrate, firing rifles in the air.

“We bless the (Jerusalem) operation. It will not be the last,” Hamas said in a text message sent to reporters.

I know this is a sensitive issue, but do the Israelis treat the deaths of Palestinians much better?

  2. 2 Jill Miller Zimon on March 7th, 2008 2:53 pm

Craig, that is a fair question. Yes, they do. When is the last time – if ever – that you’ve read about or seen pictures of Israelis pouring into the streets to celebrate the death of any Arab, including Arafat? More Israelis showed relief at the death of Meir Kahane than have ever shown pleasure at the death of Arabs.

However, that is my recollection and knowledge – if you know otherwise, and aren’t just baiting (and I don’t believe you are, sincerely), please do bring up that info. But I am not aware of such behavior at all on the part of the Israelis – Arab or Jew.

    JMZ,
I am not trying to bait you at all. I was in Haifa several times when I was in the Navy and, from my own personal experience, I don’t believe there is any love lost on the Palestinians.
Orthodox Jews in Israel walk around with automatic weapons and shoot them off at rallies just like you see Palestinians do on TV, but I never see pictures of that in the U.S. MSM either.
Just yesterday, it was reported that Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip has created the worst humanitarian crisis since the Israeli occupation began in 1967. Is this happening without the Israelis knowledge?

  4. 4 Jill Miller Zimon on March 7th, 2008 10:14 pm

See – this strikes me as very odd – many Orthodox Jews do not even believe in the statehood. I don’t doubt that they are emotionally capable of doing like the Palestinians do when one of their own are killed, but you are right – I don’t see pictures of it in the US or MSM – that is true, and certainly not helpful, that it is excluded.

This – “Is this happening without the Israelis knowledge?” is no less true than the humanitarian crises the U.S. has caused in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan which we too know about.

  5. 5 Craig on March 7th, 2008 10:56 pm

    JMZ,
I saw their rallies first-hand, machine guns firing in the air as they screamed about who knows what. I don’t know what they were excited about since I am not Israeli, but they were a sight to behold.
While it is true we know about Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, they are thousands of miles away and easily ignored by our corporate media. Americans are deliberately insulated from dealing with the atrocities that are being wrought in their name.
In Israel, the Palestinian situation is personal.

I will think about what you’ve written, Craig. I confess, it’s hard for me to even imagine the Orthodox of Mea Shearim owning machine guns, let alone firing them in the air. I’m sure you know that many of them opt out of military service completely.

Promise me that if you see something about this, you’ll try to remember to drop a comment or an email? I would like to know more and am feeling naive that I don’t. Thanks.

On 9/11 the news media showed Muslim dancing in the streets too! A month later it was revealed that it was old footage, well before 9/11.
The CNN apology was hardly noticed but not one person forgot that supposed image.

One can not assume because they saw it on Tv that it is accurate.

Once again, JMZ you are not showing or even hinting at an objective view. A simple google search will show 50 times the coverage for a single Israeli killed vs dozens of the Palestinians.

  8. 8 Jill Miller Zimon on March 11th, 2008 7:02 am

James, if you are reading this blog because you expect it to be objective, then you will in fact be disappointed regularly.

  9. 9 Tim Kelley on March 11th, 2008 9:55 am

James that is a blatant lie- The palastinians were dancing in the streets right AFTER 9/11 – this is the truth. But whatever- I think some people always find a way of explaining away hatred on both sides…not good either way you slice it.
My brother was the only American I know that RIGHT after 9/11 (he lived in Manhattan at the time) – was on the streets playing h is guitar and singing give peace a chance-look upWade Kelley on Myspace) where were all these peace loving politicians THEN…they were goose stepping with the rest ready for vengeance…they all crack me up with their peace posturing now.

  10. 10 JAMES RUGGIERO on March 11th, 2008 12:29 pm

Yes it was old footage, Mr. Kelly, can you prove me wrong? Blatant is a strong word, would you bet your life on it being a lie?
In fact the only press account from Manhattan of people dancing was “dancing Israeli’s”.
Google it and you will find an ABC story amongst others.

OK JMZ, no objectivity, it has been noted.
Least your honest, but please for the sake of all peoples think objectively, even if thats not what you choose to write.
Ps did you get my email about Progressohio ?
I wish they at least tell me why they blocked me. I guess my free speech isn’t that free.
