At the base of this issue are two things: 1) how Eliot Spitzer really feels about himself – no, really, not any of the pop psycho babble crap people will throw out and 2) the relationship he has with his wife.

It may as well be legalized, but that is a different issue. The point is it’s not legal and apparently set himself up as a shining example of good character; never a good idea. The real issue I have is that he supposedly used the name of a close friend of his when he would sign in to hotels. That was very wrong. And no the friend was not named John Doe lol.

The big problem he has is that he paid to transport her from New York to DC and back, a clear violation of the old Mann Act. A felony even. That’s what the GOP will use to impeach him with. Republican would be better off letting him stay in office, weakened.

P.S. Jane Hamsher on FireDogLake makes ridiculous arguments… “Why would the bank tell the IRS and not Spitzer himself if there was a suspicious transfer? Spitzer is a longtime client, a rich guy and the governor.” -Because the IRS is supposed to track suspicious transactions as a part of its mission. When a person makes repeated transfers of money in a set amount of time and conveniently keeps the amount of the transfer just below the IRS red flag magic $ number they notice. Which leads to the question is heing being extorted or bribing himself? WHich then leads to a public corruption case. Which answers Hamsher’s next point: “What is a USA doing prosecuting a prostitution case? This isn’t normally what the feds spend their time with.” They weren’t going after a prostitution case they thought the guy was corrupt. Which if you ask me prosecuting crimes that you are yourself partaking in is by definition corruption.

I am not shocked at all. We let these politicians stay in these offices forever and rarely ever hold them accountable. Running for office should entail a specific agenda with a set plan of desired accomplishments. Instead we get these bums that make careers of raising money with goals & plans that are purely to keep them in power. Then they leave to the private sector to make millions as a contractor or as a lobbyist to manipulate the system for the good of clients (often times foreign interests) and not the people. Spitzer has an ego the size of the empire building so this is no surprise.
