If you’re a woman of a certain age, did you see yourself in one of these three women, or maybe all of them? I still can sing pretty much every word to every song each of them ever recorded.

I admired all of them; I felt Joni Mitchell was so much more creative than I could ever dream of being myself; I identified most with Carly Simon because she talked about her fears and I felt connected because of that. I guess I feel so many song writers speak to my soul whether they are male or female. It’s the idea that we are so much more alike to each other than we are dissimilar.

All three but especially Joni Mitchell, “Both Sides Now” is still one of those songs that hits me even more now as I’m older than it did the very first time I heard it.

Joni Mitchell. I became addicted to her music in my youth. And later, whenever she came out with a new “album” I would get it out of loyalty and gratitude. Her songs carried me through restless times. Her poetry, her voice pierced my soul.

Janis Ian too, btw; and more recently, Alanis Morissette, Chrissie Hynde…Annie Lennox’s new CD is really good!

Carole – that’s a really good explanation of the appeal of these artists, besides the fact that they are all so melodic. Also – good suggestions re: Ian and Hynde. Morissette, Lennox – I like them as much but their style and impact on me is different – do you think of them in the same way as the other three in the VF story?

LisaRenee – The Circle Game too – she just is so lyrical – I feel as though few musical artists write like that anymore – or I am just old. :)

Constance – not more to add to that. Thanks for reading and commenting.
