Looks nice! But will take time to learn how to navigate.

Here’s the Sound of Ideas’ “R to the Third” for tomorrow:

Reporters’ Roundtable: Political Drama with Dann and Dimora

Topics: Environment, Arts, Politics

Two Plain Dealer reporters get bounced by Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora. Attorney General Marc Dann releases redacted emails but can’t escape the spotlight. The House and the Governor square off on the energy bill. Join us for a conversation about those stories and others from the week’s news.

Guests:
Chris Quinn, Metro Editor, The Plain Dealer
Jay Miller, government reporter, Crain’s Cleveland Business
Bill Cohen, correspondent, Ohio Public Radio statehouse news bureau

Notice there are some new social media links at the bottom of the description (on their website, not here).

Maybe we should get Dan Moulthrop to tweet? Then again, maybe he already is and we – okay, I – don’t know his handle…

The short version is: go read this post at Feministing.com.

The long version starts at this post at Feministing.com.

The quick hit on the incident is that the admittedly drunken now-former public relations officer of the Southern Illinois University College Republicans wrote and sent this e-mail to Feministing.com (posted in the second link above):

Men are better than women look at the comparison in IQ men are scientifically proven to have a higher IQ by roughly 5 points, or 5% you cannot dispute science sorry and if you want a much better website than your sh***y one you might want to go to [redacted]. I think you would gain a lot more knowledge from that website and you might learn about the truth that way you would not be so stupid and ignorant you stupid c***s. [asterisks edited in by me]

The comments in that thread detail reader reactions and the reaction and action of fellow SIU College Republicans.  The first link to Feministing in this post describes what’s happened since.

Here’s the comment I left there:

Thank you to Jessica for publishing the original e-mail and keeping updates posted as well.

I’d like to add that in addition to the hope the exchanges show about how, as Jessica wrote about,”we can hold harassers accountable, and how seriously the “real” world will take hate speech – online or off.”, the actions by the young men involved (GOP notwithstanding) demonstrate that people can learn from their behavior and others’ behavior. And who is to say that Alex Kochno won’t learn or hasn’t learned?

It’s our consistency and persistence in dealing with hate speech (by using more speech) that not only reinforces for us and other women or targets of hate speech that harassers can be held accountable, but that they might also stop their behavior.

I didn’t say it will for sure change them, of course. :) But this incident gives me hope that our persistence can change people.

A hattip to Jeff Hess who always champions the idea that we battle hate speech with more speech.

I’m trying to get back to regular posting at The Moderate Voice without too many cross-posts.  Here are two recent exclusives:

Randi Rhodes is at it again

David Gergen says, the longer this goes, the more likely one of them is the VP

Jerid Kurtz of Buckeye State Blog publicly announced his departure from BSB today, while David Potts fka Ohio Valley Politics fka Left of Ohio and Nick DeCenzo fka Blue Ohio take on co-primary authorship of the blog. I’ve linked to David many times, in part because of his emphasis on primary source blogging. I’m not very familiar with Nick fka Dr. Truth but no doubt will be through my RSS.

Nick included this link to BSB’s beta version now in the works.

I wish there was more gender diversity at BSB in the main posts’ authors – that would have been very cool indeed if one of the new primary authors was a female.  But, a change is a change and I’ve never stopped reading BSB  – only commenting, when the frattiness quotient gets too high. I’m certain that many more people read it than comment on it or about it anyway – as is the case with most blogs.

I wish good luck to Jerid, David, Nick and we readers.
