Read this piece by Tom Hayden first.

Now, read why Tom Hayden,

is employing an ancient literary-political device, in which a man wards off charges of sexism by citing the example of a woman: I’m not averse to votes for women, but my wife, sir, won’t hear of it! Barbara is female — so that makes it okay for Hayden quote her comparing Hillary Clinton to “a screech on the blackboard” and Lady Macbeth. Because those are certainly similes that have never been used before! And that have no misogynist connotations, as in a woman who seeks public power is shrill and strident, a would-be despot who’ll stop at nothing to achieve her evil ends, and is just so darn unlikeable, too. So bitter!

Exactly. Thank you again, Katha Pollitt.

So many women to emulate, so little time.

I am excited to link to the stories I wrote and consulted on for Catalyst Ohio as they were being updated and edited over the last few months. It was a great honor to work with Charlise Lyles, the publication’s editor. I often learn far more than can be included in the articles and this package of stories was no exception (which means I feel like I gained more than I gave). Thanks also to Wendy Hoke who performed wonders of editing as well on my work.

Here’s Scott’s Q&A with Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann

And four from me:

Early College: Cleveland skims the cream, others look for gold

Early College is as much a culture as it is a school

Counseling, confidence and college

Regent’s ideas get the green light but flash for caution ahead (see page 8 or 5 of 11 in the pdf)

I am such a sucker for primary source blogging.  Here’s a teaser from the Columbus Education Association’s blog:

The CEA Blog recently conducted an interview with Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Topics discussed included charter schools, vouchers, pending legislation in the Ohio House and Senate, as well as United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling’s plan for differentiated accountability. Governor Strickland expanded on his officially unreleased 6 point plan for education reform in the state of Ohio. Check back Monday, April 28th for this exciting interview. [my emphasis]

Hmm – he’s been in office for 16 months and all we get is a  six point plan for education reform in Ohio?

Aw – I’m just being difficult. I bet they are really long points.

1. Yale art student needs Dictionary Use 101.

2. Hard to call this an update but it’s reinforcement of the fact that abstinence-only programs do not work to “…cut teen pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases or [delay] the age at which sex begins…” Of course, having schools hand out condoms with prom bags…? Why do the schools hand out prom bags in the first place? I never got a prom bag. Sigh.

3. A reminder that Ohio is regressing in electing women to political office.

10. You’ll have to follow Eric’s blog now – which is not a bad thing, but the WKYC disappearance from Akron sounds like a terrible decision for many residents.

11. A WCPN broadcast that I missed: how to do charter schools in Ohio the right way, E-Prep. (De Magno Opere asks, as I giggle, Haven’t we gotten rid of charter schools YET?! – my emphasis)

12. Just a repeat on how absolutely SUCKY ABC’s coverage was for the Pennsylvania debate, courtesy of Tom Shales.

Liz Massey has a beautiful blog, Creative Liberty. I cold-pitched her for a freelance profile of local artist and syndicated cartoonist Jenny Campbell about three or so years ago (I can’t remember anymore, Liz!) and did some other short pieces for her also. She is a wonderful and generous-soul editor, so I was quite flattered when she asked me to answer some questions for her In The Studio With series.

Here’s the full exchange and here’s an excerpt:

What advice would you give to a “blocked” artist in your discipline to free up their creative energies?

Zimon: This is a difficult question that lacks a simple answer that works universally. Sometimes it’s spending an hour on the phone laughing with a good writing buddy of mine that gets me unstuck. Sometimes it’s a hug from one of my kids; sometimes it’s a deadline looming – for something else! – that gets me going on what I need to do immediately.
Eating a cookie, brownie or M&Ms does not usually help, but I often try it anyway – just to see if it still doesn’t work.

I thought so back when it happened but Ohio Daily Blog and the Columbus Dispatch indicate that that fish is still alive. From the Dispatch’s blog, The Daily Briefing:

Ohio House Democratic Leader Joyce Beatty announced this morning that she asked for and received the resignation of Rep. Matthew H. Barrett, D-Amherst, who had a picture of a topless woman pop up in front of a high-school class during a civics lecture last fall.

“It became clear that Rep. Barrett had not been forthright with me and his colleagues,” Beatty said in a statement.

Beatty said she acted immediately to demand Barrett’s resignation after he admitted he was not truthful about the photos displayed by Barrett during a classroom presentation at Norwalk High School. She did not elaborate.

Okay – how long until we get elaboration and any guesses on where will see that info first?

Unabated. Listen to Diane Rehm’s entire hour dedicated to this topic. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama voted for it, John McCain is says we’ll end up with lawsuits.

Yo, John – that’s what happens when people break a law that other people have decided is necessary. Talk about whiners.

Here’s the New York Times article on the SCOTUS Ledbetter case which is what brought the proposed legislation to the precipice yesterday.

Let’s not forget about how much greater the gap is for WOC.

Wrong is wrong. It is absolutely gobstopping the extent to which people will go to avoid paying up.  And at whose additional cost?
