Liz Massey has a beautiful blog, Creative Liberty. I cold-pitched her for a freelance profile of local artist and syndicated cartoonist Jenny Campbell about three or so years ago (I can’t remember anymore, Liz!) and did some other short pieces for her also. She is a wonderful and generous-soul editor, so I was quite flattered when she asked me to answer some questions for her In The Studio With series.

Here’s the full exchange and here’s an excerpt:

What advice would you give to a “blocked” artist in your discipline to free up their creative energies?

Zimon: This is a difficult question that lacks a simple answer that works universally. Sometimes it’s spending an hour on the phone laughing with a good writing buddy of mine that gets me unstuck. Sometimes it’s a hug from one of my kids; sometimes it’s a deadline looming – for something else! – that gets me going on what I need to do immediately.
Eating a cookie, brownie or M&Ms does not usually help, but I often try it anyway – just to see if it still doesn’t work.

    Shalom Jill,

    All block is fear.

Figure out what you’re afraid of.

Realize that it’s nothing to be afraid of, then get back to writing, or…

Realize that you can beat your fear with courage and get back to writing, or…

Realize that you can’t face the fear and change careers.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

Are you confirming that cookies, brownies and M&Ms don’t work, Jeff?

Well – Liz, you are a very benevolent editor. You know how we freelancers really appreciate that at certain times of our careers! :)

    Shalom Jill,

No more than whiskey, heroin and sex.

    B’shalom,

    Couldn’t agree more, Jeff. :)
