Wow. Well, I must say, my off the record sentiments and exhortations definitely support these moves, but when you read them, well, they are harsh. But necessary.
The Ohio Democratic Party, which strongly backed Dann’s come-from-behind campaign in 2006, is preparing to sever its ties with Dann. Chairman Chris Redfern said he expects the party’s executive committee to rescind its 2006 endorsement of Dann when it meets Saturday, which Redfern said would make Dann an independent officeholder. Democrats also are prepared to lead the impeachment drive, Redfern said.
“Pending Saturday’s events, he’ll be holding office as an independent who was elected as a Democrat,” Redfern said. “We will distance ourselves both figuratively and literally from Marc Dann until he makes the right decision, which is to step down.”
Plunderbund writes about the removal of information about Dann from the ODP website and also has a video of Gov. Strickland in which he says that they’ll use “whatever action is necessary” to remove Dann.
Pho writes about the legal provisions related to replacing Dann.
Sigh. It is all too sad.
Sigh.

[...] [UPDATE 5:02pm: Dann is apparently going to be drummed out of the Democratic party.] [...]
Taking him off the website is about one of the most hardball things I have ever seen in politics.
Ben, I’m only one person and a blogger at that, but the language I’ve used in off the record e-mails and phone calls are exactly what you’d expect from me when it comes to a situation like this – involving men in positions of power and how they’ve treated women who are in subordinate positions. Dann’s misdeeds go beyond all that, and of course those deeds also were committed by others.
But again, if I was voicing this stuff, despite anything anyone may try to do to portray me as hysterical, I ain’t hysterical. I’m just damn %**$ serious. And a lawyer. And a social worker, and a mom and wife and a daughter.
Just. not. good.
How was Dann’s preying on young women in his employ any different than Bill Clinton?
As far as I know Dann hasn’t perjured himself unlike the former president.
I’m satisfied that this action by the ODP will provide cover for the Democrat candidates this November.
It still doesn’t force Dann out immediately, though. That’s the rub.
Mark – have you misplaced your moral compass?
You know, Daniel – you usually have a lot of heart, soul AND pragmatism in your comments. But all I’m reading today is strategy.
I don’t mind being called a Pollyanna, but really – the ODP didn’t act solely to provide cover – there’s serious rep at stake as well as a completely dysfunctional cabinet. It IS necessary, the steps being taken, to get Ohio running properly, you know.
Likewise – as I was saying about DeWine – only DeWine can make DeWine make threats full of wrath. Likewise, Dann’s deadly sins will haunt him if he chooses to engage them further. The rest of us have to do what we have to do.
Some people want to be punished, you know. And that’s just as sad.
I think Redfern finally realized that what was becoming a desperate situation for Ohio Democrats required desperate measures. Dann is a real piece of work.
And I think Mark may have been commenting on the following:
Strickland said, as a congressman, he opposed former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment. But he said the two situations are “dramatically different.” His request for Dann to resign is not based substantially on his extramarital affair, Strickland said.
“It goes well beyond that. It involves many, many factors that are much more complicated than that,” he said.
Apologies to Mark and thank yous to Bad American if that is indeed what I missed – sorry Mark.
BUT – that said – still – that kind of parsing has always seemed obsessive to me. We know what’s wrong, whether there’s a law making it illegal or not, in situations like this.
It is time to begin speculation about Dann’s successor. My first thought is that Strickland should pick a respected female judge or former judge. Secretary of State (and former common pleas judge) Jennifer Brunner comes to mind, but appointing her would mean a special election for both AG and her successor as SoS. Since the Secretary of State is an important member of the reapportionment board, I think that appointment is unlikely, even if she would be a terrific appointee.
Subodh Chandra (beat by Dann in the 06 primary) is unlikely, I think, even though this may be a good year for guys with funny names. Attorney and current higher ed czar Eric Fingerhut should also be on the short list.
Other suggestions?
Publius – I have no insider knowledge but here are a few things:
1. I do know from at least three sources that Fingerhut is not in the running – HE does not consider himself to be in the running. It’s not a happening thing. That’s what I’m being told.
2. A few people have suggested that Rich Cordray move to AG and Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis go to Treasurer.
3. Some people would like to see Subodh go into the AG’s role (I voted for Subodh in the primary and endorsed him prior to it).
The issues have to do with who can win in November, if this situation does in fact end before September 24 I believe it is.
My preference is for resolution sooner rather than later. Given the clear message the ODP, the governor and so many Ohio Dems. in office have sent re: Dann should step down, I would have to guess that it will be sooner not later and someone will have to run.
[...] Hat tip to JMZ at Writes Like She Talks for informing readers that state Democrat leaders are severing party ties to Marc Dann, which is a step in the right direction. Possibly related posts: (automatically [...]
I could see the Cordray move. I looked through his bio and it seems like he could get it done. This might be the best move Dems could make, though I wonder if the average person would see it that way.
I think the Democratic Party and State officials handled the situation exactly right. It will set a standard for both parties when scandals occur. Harsh, but necessary to send a message that the State of Ohio will not tolerate corruption.
As a lifelong [paleo-conservative] Republican, I am frankly envious…
[...] DAGA from their Mississippi bad press (Refresh your memory). Will DAGA end up following the example of the Ohio Democratic Party? Will they end their relationship with the man who once angled for the top AG spot at DAGA? Will [...]
