Governor, Statewide Democrats Call on Attorney General Dann to Resign
Columbus, Ohio – Governor Ted Strickland, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, Treasurer Richard Cordray, House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty, Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller and Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern called for Attorney General Marc Dann’s resignation last night.
The text of a letter sent to Attorney General Marc Dann last night, Sunday, May 4, 2008, follows:
Sunday May 4, 2008
Attorney General Marc Dann
State of Ohio
Rhodes State Office Tower 30 East Broad Street
Columbus, OH 43215
Dear Attorney General Dann,
We write to you tonight to ask that you resign your position as Attorney General of the State of Ohio. We believe that your actions have irreparably harmed your ability to effectively serve the people of our great state.
The work of the Office of the Attorney General matters more, and is far more important, than any one person. In many, many cases it is all that stands between the people and the powerful. Sadly, we no longer have even the most remote hope that you can continue to effectively serve as Attorney General and that is why we are asking for your resignation.
We also want to make you aware that if you do not choose to resign, Democratic members of the Ohio House of Representatives will immediately introduce a resolution seeking your impeachment.
We sincerely hope that this action will not be necessary and that you will act in the best interest of the people of Ohio by tendering your resignation Monday morning.
Sincerely,
Ted Strickland, Governor
Lee Fisher, Lt. Governor
Sherrod Brown, U.S. Senator
Jennifer Brunner Secretary of State
Richard Cordray, Treasurer
Ray Miller, Minority Leader
Joyce Beatty, House Minority Leader
Chris Redfern, Chairman, Ohio Democratic Party

Get a load of Dann’s reply to the Governor et al (from the Youngstown Vindicator website):

Below is the text of an e-mail sent today by Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann to all associates of his office.
Last night, I received a call from Governor Strickland advising me that he and the other statewide Democratic office holders along with the minority leaders of the House and Senate were planning to ask me to resign today.
That letter has been sent.
I wanted to share with you what I told the Governor.
I told him that he and the other officeholders, as well as the members of the legislature, should continue to expect that we will continue to provide high-quality legal services to all of them. I told the Governor that we will continue to make our law enforcement partnerships work to protect the people of the State of Ohio.
I told him that our consumer protection and environmental protection and civil rights work will continue on behalf of the State of Ohio.
That is exactly what I am doing today. I am in the office, have rolled up my sleeves and am working on behalf of the people of State of Ohio.
I hope all of you will do the same.
I think that there is a great chance that we can continue to do great work for the people of the State.
I know that this is difficult, and I am truly sorry to have put all of you in this position.
But our work is too important to do anything but our jobs today.
Marc Dann
For those of you around the state who can’t understand why Dann is still trying to hang on, it’s all about the cash. Just one more paycheck means another $3000 or so (before taxes). Two more paychecks and its $6000. I was in the gallery in Washington 6 years ago when the U.S. Congress finally voted to expell Traficant. Just like with Jimbo, Marc Dann will milk this as long as he can, just to get one more $3000 paycheck.
I’m confused. Monday morning. This Monday, today? Or Monday of next week?
I assume today – could be wrong tho.
Gang, my other half told me way back in the last election not to vote for Marc Dann because there would be trouble with him. As usual, she was right.
Just about every newspaper in this state has published an editorial calling for his resignation, and of those that haven’t yet, they probably will soon.
This guy’s a joke. It’s too bad we can’t simply fire him on the spot — just like regular employers can (and do).
Will K., I saw it coming, too. I voted for Betty Montgomery.
Golly, Strickland brought in a great team to help Ohio. First, we had Frankie Coleman, then Brunner and her $31MM voting change demand and now the “Marc Dann” show.
I wonder who is next? Golly, this is exactly what Ohio needed; a Keystone Cops administration. Imagine the fact these people were elected with the promise they would help us???
Well, I *too* could say, “Blame Canada!”, but that wouldn’t exactly be fair, now would it? We need to remember that in Ohio, voters elect our AG, rather than appoint the position, as the US President does.
To say that *Strickland* “brought in a great team to help Ohio” is therefore a gross misstatement and a total disregard for the facts: Marc Dann ran his own election campaign “to restore faith in Ohio’s government.”
We could have easily voted Betty Montgomery in for another term (and should have, IMHO — and I’m “liberal” voter!), and none of this would have happened.
But Ohio voters, in their eminent wisdom (read: illiteracy), voted for Dann because, again according to Dann in his campaign, “we need a change.”
Strickland and his administration had nothing to do with it: we could have re-elected Taft (if he had run) and elected Dann and we still would have had the problem we have today, because it was Marc Dann that created this mess, and no one else.
Of course, Taft was an idiot, too…
Well, what Nate is ignoring is how Taft and company contributed to their own party members – voters who called themselves Republicans – not voting for them down the ticket due to some odd and outright unelectable choices. So – it’s hardly any one party’s fault. That’s silly.
Indeed. People were screaming about Taft, too. I know I was.
It’s interesting to note that both Strickland and Dann have canceled their out-of-town speaking engagements: Srickland to deal with the Dann issue, and Dann canceled his graduation speech at CWRU School of Law May 18th — to appear as if he’s really working.
Then he says this: “If I reach a point where I’m detracting from the office, I’ll reconsider [resigning].”
Ummm… Marc… maybe that’s why people are asking you to resign… and moving to impeach only the second Ohio elected official to be impeached in our history as a state (the last was an elected judge in 1805). A smart politician knows the signs of the times…
Whoa, do not conclude that I thought Taft and Co. were great for Ohio. Let’s be honest here: There are 2 political parties in the USA and either you are in one, or you are out. NOTHING will ever get done b/c of that. NONE have skin in the game. Strickland has done nothing as jobs leave and he either campaigns out of state for Hillary, or churns to imply he is doing something for Ohio. WAKE UP. NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO MARC DANN. IT IS ALL IN THE PLAN. And you people thought Taft was a snake???
And now… for what might be the last word on this subject…
This video on the Daily Show with John Stewart just about says it all… Sorry: it’s 7 minutes long, but it’s worth it!
