So says a new study:

[Dr. Davaasambuu] Ganmaa and colleagues assessed coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption among 85,987 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study.

The women were between 30 and 55 years old at the start of the study. Over 22 years of follow up, 5,272 women developed breast cancer.

After accounting for other factors potentially associated with breast cancer risk, such as age, smoking status, body mass, physical activity, alcohol intake, family history, menopausal status, history of hormone therapy, and number of children, the researchers found no elevated risk of breast cancer among women who reported drinking 4 or more cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee or tea per day, compared with those who drank less than 1 cup daily.

They also found no apparent association between the occurrence of breast cancer and intakes of other caffeinated soft drinks and chocolate, which contribute to overall caffeine intake.

Here’s the home page for the Nurses’ Health Study.

This is a relief for me, even though I can’t imagine drinking four cups or more a day.

Well, I can imagine drinking more that four cups daily, becuase I drink 5-6 cups per day.

So, yes, I like the results of this study :)

where do you think I draw the energy for tweeting/writing my pithy, but still brilliant comments? ;)

I picked up the habit when working 10-12 hours a day in an ICF/MR (pennsylvania government- speak for a residential treatment center serving developmentally challenged)over 20 years ago. Smoking/coffee go hand-in-hand in health care/allied health (my mom is a now-retired psych nurse). thankfully I only picked up the latter habit.

I drink the equivalent of at least two pots of black coffee every day; so over the yrs I have read all the ‘results of studies.’ LOL. Depending on the year, coffee can even be something to help extend your life :-) I agree, glad this was a ‘coffee is good’ report LOL
