I understand what you mean about people wanting answers or “truth” – the Orthodox in Judaism might be described by some that way. my relatives in Israel who are very religious used to tell me that whenever I would comment about how complicated I thought it was to be kosher and so on. They’d look at me like I had the third eye when I thought that it was them that should find that lifestyle complicated. lol Guess it all depends on where you’re sitting.

I come from that background….

It is a complex mix of nationalism, Republican politics, militarism,authoritarianism and fundamentalist theology.

In Parsley’s case he considers himself an anointed apostle (prophet) who is able to “impart” his power to others.

Many people want answers. They want “truth.” Parsley gives people security and answers. It makes life easier to live because you don’t have to think. Just obey. Follow the leader.

When I left such thinking behind I had a difficult time at first. No one telling me what to do. No quick, pat answers. I had to think for myself. Of course..thinking for myself brought me to a Progressive view and the Democratic party. Religiously, it is much tougher (in this area) because Churches with a Progressive view (and a tolerant view) are far and few between.

Hi Bruce – glad I’m not the only one who thinks they look alike!

I agree with you about the mixture – what’s more important, I suppose, is figuring out to whom that mixture appeals and why, and what alternatives can be offered to such individuals that are more inline with the multicultural, secular nature of this country.

Do you think that it takes a certain combination of concerns to bring people to a Parsley perspective?

Fortunately Dawson as Newkirk in Hogan’s Heroes was quite safe and funny.

Parsley is dangerous and not much he does humors me.

I have followed Parsley from his early days as a Baptist. I pastored between Zanesville and Lancaster (Somerset) for a number of years. Parsley cast wide shadow and influenced many people.

His melding of nationalism, militarism, and right-wing Christianity is a deadly mixture.

They could be twins. I like Parsley’s suits better…..:)
