No surprise to me though Editor & Publisher isn’t as sure.

The most striking numbers first:

From Rasmussen: …

And by a 29/44 margin, men and women together, they do not believe that she is ready to be President.

The more complete graphs:

The first national polls on John McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin yesterday came out today from Rasmussen and Gallup — and contrary to what the GOP probably hoped, she scored less well with women than men.

Here’s a finding from Gallup: Among Democratic women — including those who may be disappointed that Hillary Clinton did not win the Democratic nomination — 9% say Palin makes them more likely to support McCain, 15% less likely.

From Rasmussen: Some 38% of men said they were more likely to vote for McCain now, but only 32% of women. By a narrow 41% to 35% margin, men said she was not ready to be president — but women soundly rejected her, 48% to 25%.

Only 9% of Obama supporters said they might be more likely to vote for McCain.

Overall, voters expressed a favorable impression of her by a 53/26 margin, but there was a severe gender gap on this: Men embraced her at 58% to 23%, while for women it was 48/30.

And by a 29/44 margin, men and women together, they do not believe that she is ready to be President.

And on Gallup’s numbers:

Gallup is now out with its own initial poll. It also shows women with a slightly less favorable view of Palin. An excerpt from USA Today:

There is wide uncertainty about whether she’s qualified to be president. In the poll, taken Friday, 39% say she is ready to serve as president if needed, 33% say she isn’t and 29% have no opinion.

That’s the lowest vote of confidence in a running mate since the elder George Bush chose then-Indiana senator Dan Quayle to join his ticket in 1988. In comparison, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was seen as qualified by 57%-18% after Democrat Barack Obama chose him as a running mate last week…..

Remember, this is all from the judging a book by its cover and wanting to believe in something and someone, if you’re in the GOP, that would be McCain.

What happens to the numbers as we hear more and learn more about McCain’s running mate?

Her numbers get better when her story becomes more known. That ones easy.

And also, as Bush showed us in 2004 the path to victory is through bringing out your base, not the mush middle.

You’re right though, this won’t bring in the Hillary voter, but I doubt that it was ever meant to. We’ll know soon enough.

The more people learn the less they’ll like. She’ll fire up the base, and that’s something, but in a year where D identification and registration is swamping R, that’s a big gamble.

At this stage we’re obviously just stating opinions. While I expect some groups will like Gov. Palin less the more they know her, I also expect other groups will like her more the more they know her. The question is: which groups are larger? (I’m guessing the latter, but we’ll see.) For what they’re worth, two anecdotes about favorable reactions to Gov. Palin by Ohioans are here and here. (I’m sure someone can find comparable negative reactions.)

Well let’s start and end with one thing – she’s a dominionist stalking horse.

And that should scare the hell out of every freethinker in this country, although for people like Nix and Columbuser, this is probably seen as a plus.

People like Palin and her ilk spit on Jefferson’s grave.

And I’m sure they also have no problem with the fascism that’s going on today in St. Paul ahead of the GOP convention. If this doesn’t make you fearful for our republic, nothing will:

McCain insulted women by picking her but perhaps he did so because she was pretty. Or maybe it was because he just couldn’t stomach Romney or poor Tim Pawlenty was just too wimpy looking. Who knows? But I don’t by that crap about her being qualified at all. She isn’t. She isn’t Hillary or Barack or even someone like Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Condi Rice; all of them have records, have worked, have campaigned, have positions on issues of importance, having proven themselves nationally etc. McCain miscalculated putting this woman on his ticket. Women aren’t stupid; we know why she is there. Hillary voters know why she is there and while some of them are still irritated with Obama (for no reason other than he won the primary) they are not going to give up their hard-core principles and hard won rights (to abortion for example), for some two term governor with no experience. THe conservatives like those disingenous phonies Lindsey Graham and Sean Hannity won’t be able to make us change our minds. That she is a mom is nice; so am I; that she was on the PTA is nice too, so are many of us; that she is a 2nd year governor in a corrupt state is a career she can build on for the future; she is not qualified as vice president/president now. McCain has insulted us and possibly, put us at risk in this country. The only solution is that we must all come together and vote for the Barack/Joe ticket. I’m serious.

    Two url’s for you http://www.sarahpalinisnthillaryclinton.com/

I hope this gets out there for anyone daring to compare the two, not that there have been many takers.

And I also wanted to share a video posted to my blog — McCain is apparently an ass man. . . his respect for females knows no bounds

Its a bit like thinking that picking the absolute best person as a partner even though you do not like them is a positive. Everything is perfect…why am I miserable?

The base of the republican party is persuaded by conviction and consistency and gut feelings. Palin is very likable, but is she wise? I am sure in some ways she is and others she is not, its not that wise to get pregnant at 44, but it happens and taking transcontinental flights while being a high risk pregnancy is not wise either. She did what put her faith in god on this matter? Was this woman told that the behavior or life circumstance was at odds…it appears so as she kept the pregnancy and the realities of it being problematic a secret to the public.

That’s a 44 year old prom queen keeping the pregnancy a secret for fear of what others may think about it? I like her except for that part, it bothers me in many ways.

She is not perfect as nobody is, but she should not have been flying while pregnant. What really matters and what people think…her son is entering the army and she proudly announces it, not wise either. If he fall in harms way does her probability to gain empathy from voters go up? The fact is he is serving and that is admirable and very dangerous as we all know, using it to gain votes is unnerving to me.

Finding out that he serving inadvertently would have impressed me, that should have been kept a secret, not the pregnancy! her announcing it bothers me…for his own safety! SARAH!

What will they think or what do we care what they think, priority issues? That the reoccurring issue isn’t it prioritizes and this balancing act, who’s eyes are impressed and why.

There is no experience that will prepare anyone for the presidency…

We are never going back to 1950 people, what is the dream or vision and how to build an alignment on it.

What is happening in Alaska, its much to do with greed and capitalism, this NG pipeline where is it going to please do not tell me to power the steam generators to extract oil sands! That process is very dirty they are creating a toxic wasteland. Then in process the sludge that will seep into the ground water will screw up everything as the pending thaw mounts in speed.

They are messing with the boreal forest, thats more important than the rain forests for oxygen!

Tell Sarah to fuck off, the north slope oil and natural gas will perpetuate further destruction. The oil sands are not an answer its the worst resource on earth and they are going to use more resources at higher prices to get to it. Its all going to be sold to China for what? To be consumed, gobble gobble.

You have to realize you cannot have it all…

When Sarah lived in Wassla that’s 100 miles from the city center, Alaska version of a suburb? …her husband worked in the north of the state…yes this is efficient use of resources!

Alaska is one big resource and they are totally dependent on it, she is the prettiest most charming threat to the environment ever.

I say go for the resources…when there is not a single Hummer on the road….its economics and way more complex than they are making it sound.

Having read a few of the Alaskan blogs I’m not sure the more people know her the more they’ll like her. The Theocons will continue to genuflect, regardless – she gets the Christer pass on whatever she’s gotten up to. Very few women will vote her genitalia, they’ll have reasons – maybe including resentment but that isn’t genitals that’s revenge. Those who object to Theocracy will ignore her. Those interested in the use of power for personal ends won’t like her. Those who dislike earmarks will find that she has sucked aggressively at the Federal teat despite her statements to the contrary. Those who resent being out right lied to really won’t like her. Her first speech as VP candidate contained two whoppers. Those gifted with the ability to rationalize being in the deadend 28% will just look for the (R). Me? I think she’s a perfect fit with McPOW.
