Because the Obama/Biden ticket offers two individuals whose strategies on leadership compliment one another.
What do I mean?
Today, I went to a luncheon that featured four local politicians, all familiar to NE Ohioans. And at one point, Jerry Hruby, speaking in support of the GOP presidential ticket, said, “John McCain is running for John McCain.”
And I had to smirk. Isn’t that the truth? Isn’t that the reality? And for me, there’s no question that his choice of vice president was to help his run for president. Not to actually impact how he does anything – unlike Obama who on the record stated that he wanted a running mate who would challenge him. If anything, in McCain’s case, he chose someone who is the least likely to challenge him, on anything, unless it’s to be more conservative than McCain already is.
And what has McCain added to his ticket with his choice of vice president?
Very little that he didn’t already have by himself. Now there are two mavericks instead of one. Two staunch opponents to giving women choices over their reproductive health. Two lovers of big oil. Two fearmongers who don’t want you to trust anyone with a name that sounds foreign.
Two – two – two mints in one.
Now, that’s what I see and hear and read and understand when I listen to and watch McCain and Palin present their narratives and what they want us to think are their strengths as candidates.
But, just as the Obama campaign keeps reminding us about how John McCain is John McSame when it comes to how often his votes coincided with the Bush administration’s policy, I want to remind people that Obama chose Joe Biden because he is not Obama’s echo. Joe Biden presentation as decisive, confident and experience-based compliments, supplements and amplifies Obama and what the campaign’s agenda cherishes. Obama likes different – and different is good.
Vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden on November 4.

Hruby’s comment struck me as a Brecksville mayor (who inherited the position from his brother) who had no business being on that stage. Poor, poor speaker. In context, you have to mention Hruby responding to a comment from Dimora who stated McCain would be a clone of Bush. A better response would have been “John McCain is running for his country.”
Agreed, Russ – I also think that if the Republicans who care about this county could field better proxies or surrogates, who could speak or at least sound like Eckert or even Dimora (because for all that people say about him, the guy brings the passion and the votes – and you know I haven’t written nice things about the guy), they’d put a whole lot better face out there – if they have one.
There’s a theme here (though I’m reading them in reverse order).
Different is good.
