Posting without comment – what can you say?  The story is from Tampa Bay Online:

Al Austin, a longtime, high-level Republican fundraiser from Tampa, today sent to his list of political contacts an e-mail containing a joke that refers to the assassination of Barack Obama.

When asked about the e-mail, Austin said it was a mistake and apologized and that he wouldn’t knowingly have circulated it. He said he planned to send an apology and retraction to the same e-mail list.

The joke concerns a group of schoolchildren discussing the definition of “tragedy” as opposed to “great loss” or “accident.” The punch line comes when one child says that if an airplane carrying Obama and his wife, Michelle, “was struck by a ‘friendly fire’ missile and blown to smithereens,” the event might be a tragedy “because it certainly wouldn’t be a great loss, and it probably wouldn’t be an accident either.”

The Miami Herald states that Austin has bundled more than $500,000 for McCain.  H/t AmericaBlog.

    What this nation needs at this time is two intelligent people to get us out of the predicament we are in. I will gladly vote for two intelligent men. I feel sorry for you if you think the answer to the worst economy since the great depression is the two morons GOP has chosen to save this nation. Intellect should count for something. We have a man at the top of the ticket that was in the bottom of his class intellectually. And the person that would be 1/2 a breath away from the presidency attended 5 colleges before she was able to pull together enough credits to receive her diploma from the University of Idaho. They might have a piece of paper, but do they have the intelligence to lead this nation in the hard times ahead? I don’t belive so. But what else is new we elected a moron to lead the United States of America and look where it brought us. Sarah Palin would be 1/2 a breath away form having her finger on the nuclear button. Do you trust her with your
    life and the lives of your children and grandchildren? I don’t! I’m sorry you can’t take a crash course in intellect. That is why this Christian, white, Republican, woman will be voting for Barack Obama.

    Leslie, if you’re directing that at Jill you’ve made the cardinal error of not reading anything else on this blog. She has a running feature of the 28,652 reasons (give or take) to vote for Obama.

    Other than that I agree with your sentiments.

    @comment #1 “Leslie” –

    Thanks for reading and commenting but I voted for Clinton in the primary and have been Obama ever since – what did you read on my blog that made you think otherwise?

    The joke is in poor, poor taste. Please point me to your archive where you were equally (I hope) offended by the 2006 movie called Death of a President depicting the assassination of President Bush.

    I’ve read ya for awhile Jill. Don’t think I remember that one (but I could be wrong).

    Russ – 2006 – off-year – Bush was not on the ticket – but I never heard of the movie – how did you know about?
