I really don’t know what he means by that, but it comes at the very end of this AP story about last day pushes by some members of the Christian right related to how fearful they believe the world will be if Barack Obama is elected president.

Here’s Burress:

Phil Burress, head of the Ohio-based Citizens for Community Values, said the dynamics were quite different in 2004, when conservative Christians spent some energy calling Democrat John Kerry a flip-flopper but were mostly motivated by enthusiasm for George W. Bush.

Now, there is less excitement about [John] McCain than fear of an Obama presidency, Burress said.

“This reminds me of when I was a school kid, when I had to go out in the hall and bury my head in my hands because of the atom bomb,” he said.

Is he saying that he feels that the turmoil and fear of having to choose between McCain and Obama is like the atom bomb?  Or, is he just burying his head in his hands from general strife?  Honestly, I’m missing it.

    Shalom Jill,

It is hard for a Jew to understand. The worst we have to deal with is Ezekiel.

If you really want to understand what he’s feeling, find a copy of the book of Revelations, the Apocalypse of John, and sit down with a cup of tea and read it from beginning to end; not as literature but as God’s own truth, internalize it and know the fear of the End Times.

I’m not being dramatic here, this is real to these people. Their whole structure of what is good and right is about to come crashing down around them and they are gnawing on skulls.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

But is this the case no matter who the Dem was – what if it was Clinton? On social issues she is, for the most part, the same, yes?

    The Anti-Christ…

Um, I admit to a slightly lesser reaction to the idea of Pres McCain…very slightly/

Excuse me, I speak “conservative” he’s saying he thinks his team is going to lose and he’s not very motivated to even put on a jersey.

As for Obama vs. Clinton, yes they were more or less similar on social issues but the difference is that Hillz is a Machavellian pragmatist while Obama’s fealty to the social left is unwavering, he’s never once deviated; not on partial birth abortion, not on infants born alive acts, not on DOMA (which Bill signed).

Hillz would probably read polling data, Obama won’t (or maybe he will but we have no reason to think so)

    Shalom Jill,

Clinton might actually be worse. Eight years ago the forces of right and good elected a god-fearing, born again Christian man to lead this country and defeated the disciple of evil in the person of Al Gore.

For eight years their god has been watching over their nation. The election of Barack Obama will have the same effect on them as did coming down from the mountain bearing the word of god only to see the people worshiping the golden calf did on Moses.

Watch this video and pay close attention to what Tracy Kerlee has to say beginning at time mark 2:48

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

I’m not sure if you caught it (and apologize in advance for underestimating you if you did!) — he’s referring to actual drills that schoolkids went through, in which they were taken out to halls and crouched down and covered their hands. (Watch Duck and Cover for informative instructions.)

So (I think) he’s saying that the possibility of Obama being elected president is as terrifying to him as the specter of nuclear war was forty years ago. Basically, the end of the world.
