Chris Cillizza has come out with ten facts you need to know about IL congressman but soon to be Obama Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel and this one really hit home, literally, for me:

10. Rahm’s closest friend in Congress: Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro. (He lives in a basement apartment in DeLauro’s house — she is married to Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg — during his time in Washington).

Ha. I was just talking about Rosa at the NPR event with blogger Aldon Hynes of Orient Lodge.  He lives down the street from where I grew up in Connecticut and we were talking about Chris Shays (4th CD) losing in CT and then talked about Rosa and how she’s been in there a while and how I’d interned for her predecessor, Bruce A. Morrison.  Come to think of it, I wonder of Bruce would work at anything in an Obama administration.  Bruce was really ahead of his time in some ways, a very progressive congressman during the 1980s, with Reagan as president.  Anyway, my dad knows Rosa and her husband, from political fundraising work my dad used to do (I know, I’ve mentioned it before, bla bla bla).

Mom – I know you read this – you can correct me on any important facts I’m missing or I messed up.

Rahm Emanuel Is the House’s Version of Liberman!!!

Just a few tidbits on Rahm-Bo:

“There’s the story of how, the night after Clinton was elected, Emanuel was so angry at the president’s enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed a steak knife and began rattling off a list of betrayers, shouting ‘Dead! . . . Dead! . . . Dead!’ and plunging the knife into the table after every name. ‘When he was done, the table looked like a lunar landscape,’ one campaign veteran recalls. ‘It was like something out of The Godfather.’

… during the Democratic primaries in 2006, when Emanuel headed up the Dems’ congressional operation, he backed pro-war candidates over antiwar Democrats every time.

When the House Democratic majority passed a military appropriations bill slated for Iraq, a clause that would have prohibited an attack on Iran without a vote in Congress was deleted at the instigation of Emanuel and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Emanuel was on the board of Freddie Mac which was plagued with scandals involving campaign contributions and accounting irregularities.”

The best Rahm Emanuel story is not the one about the decomposing two-and-a-half-foot fish he sent to a pollster

Bill Clinton appointed Emanuel to the board of Freddie Mac, and Emanuel received $231,655 in director’s fees in 2001 and $31,060 in 2000. [Lynn Sweet, Chicago Sun-Times on Jan. 3, 2002].

Freddie Mac was forced to pay a $3.8 million fine to the Federal Election Commission to settle allegations that it illegally used “corporate resources between 2000 and 2003 for 85 fundraisers that collected about $1.7 million for federal candidates. Much of the fundraising benefited members of the House Financial Services Committee, a panel whose decisions can affect Freddie Mac.” [AP, April 18, 2006].

Since running for the House of Representatives in 2002, Emanuel received campaign contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae totaling $51,750 [opensecrets.org].

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, “Emanuel, a former Freddie Mac board member, sits on the very House subcommittee that has oversight of the federal government-sponsored enterprise at the same time that he has outstanding options for 2,500 shares of the company.”

Emanuel told Sweet there was no conflict of interest because he put his financial stake in Freddie Mac into a blind trust and would recuse himself from any votes relating to Freddie Mac. However, Freddie Mac was fined $125 million for understating its earnings by $5 billion [Forbes, December 11, 2003].

In addition to his controversial financial ties to Freddie Mac, Emanuel is “one of the biggest recipients of Wall Street campaign contributions”. [opensecrets.org] Emanuel “was the top House recipient in the 2008 election cycle of contributions from hedge funds, private equity firms and the larger securities/investment industry. Since being elected to the House six years ago, he has collected $1.5 million from the investment industry , with lawyers and law firms and the entertainment industry coming in at a distant second and third place ($682,900 and $376,100).”

“Investment bank UBS, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley are among both Obama and Emanuel’s [sic] lists of top donors .”

“Emanuel, who is currently the No. 4 Democrat in the House, has also collected $136,640 from the lobbying industry during his career, making K Street his 13th most generous industry. Obama, on the other hand, eschewed contributions from registered lobbyists for the presidential race. Obama also refused contributions from PACs, an easy task when only about 1 percent of presidential contributions come from these committees. PACs have given Emanuel about 29 percent of his total since he was first elected to Congress in 2002.”

“Emanuel was an investment banker between the Clinton administration and his election to Congress and reported a net worth in 2007 of between $5 million and $13.2 million (lawmakers report their assets and liabilities in ranges). That would make him the 34th wealthiest member of the House.” [Read more at opensecrets.org]
