This is how I learned about the announcement, from the inbox:

Statement from Ellen R. Malcolm on Ellen Moran as
President-elect Obama’s White House Communications Director

The following is a statement from EMILY’s List President and Founder, Ellen R. Malcolm, on the naming of EMILY’s List Executive Director Ellen Moran as the next Communications Director for the White House. [my emphasis]

“We are delighted that Ellen Moran has accepted the position of Communications Director at the White House. I know she will do an excellent job for President-elect Obama, just as she has done for EMILY’s List and Democratic women around the country. As Executive Director for the past two election cycles, Ellen has done a phenomenal job. She deserves tremendous credit for leading EMILY’s List this election cycle as we elected the second largest group of Democratic women in American history. She has been a stalwart ally and true friend for me and I will miss working with her on a daily basis.”

Sadly, when I went to find a corroborating news article about the appointment, the first item listed in a Google news search was this:

Ellen Moran becomes Communications Dir

Abortion activist? EMILY’s List is not Planned Parenthood or NARAL.  It’s a PAC that raises gobs of money to support female, pro-choice candidates.  Poo on AP.  From Wikipedia:

EMILY’s List has over 100,000 members across the country. Since its founding in 1984, EMILY’s List has raised over $240 million to elect 71 pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, 13 to the U.S. Senate, and eight governors. Over the course of 23 years, EMILY’s List has helped elect hundreds of pro-choice Democratic women to federal office, state legislatures, state constitutional offices, and other key local offices.

You don’t think the nearly half a billion it’s raised to help get women elected must just be the most important part of this particular PAC?

I don’t always agree with EMILY’s List (see Tennessee congressional race this year).  However, I have enormous respect for their work and their organization.  They also went opposite NARAL in their primary support for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama.  Maybe that should have gotten a mention in the headline? (sarcasm)

Anyway – best of luck to Ellen Moran. I don’t really know anything about her, but I look forward to learning more.

Great catch Jill. What a creepy headline. I agree the Emily’s can be autocratic sometimes but accomplish great things. I don’t know her either – will check around.

I love the non-biased AP headline. It really just attempts to pigeonhole a woman and an important organization that probably positively impacted this election. I was pleased that Moran had been selected to join the Obama administration. Maybe the headline isn’t so bad, let’s talk bluntly and forthright, and not beat-around-the-bush to appease those who never try to appease anyone.

I have to wonder about that selection, selecting a fund raiser? She worked the Democratic National Committee in 2004 managing media outreach and add placements. She is a bit progressive working with Union to address Wal-Mart in accountability through the AFLCIO.

I see Clinton and party influence in this appointment. Somebody really liked her, that position is behind the scenes…does speech writing? Would what Obama has to say in his inauguration speech be influenced by Moran? Not likely she will be managing information that get released through press channels. She must have been very good at in in 2004?

Unless you can name a candidate that was not a supporter of infanticide that they supported, I’d have to say the headline is accurate. I hope any “Catholics” who voted for Obama are sleeping well at night.

Strange– a PAC that raises gobs of money to support female pro-abortion candidates sounds an awful lot like an abortion activist to me…

Why deny it? Why be sad about it. Call it as it is.
