Can I just say how thrilled I am to see that Jack, the host this week of the Jewish blogging carnival, spells Chanuka the same way I do, except I don’t put an “h” at the end. Even one of my kids bugged me just yesterday for spelling it that way but it is a bona fide legit spelling.  Anyway, many thanks to Jack for hosting the carnival this week which you can read here and is incredibly packed with a wide variety of views and tales from the world of Jewish blogging.

    Shalom Jill,

The use of double letters and final h’s has always confused me in Hebrew/English transliteration. If the letter doesn’t appear in the Hebrew, why the feck do we add it in the English?

In the case of Chanukah, the only real question is do you represent the Chet with a Ch or an H?

In Hebrew the word is spelled (right to left, of course) Chet, Nun, Vav, Kof, Hey. Add three vowels: ah under the Chet, oo in the Vav and a second ah under the Kof and you have Cha Nu (oo) Kah.

    I HATE transliteration.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

Transliteration does make it a bit subjective as to whether things are correctly spelled or not.
