About Gitmo signing on Wednesday, see my post about the visual and here about the generals.

About President Obama’s signature on lifting the Mexico City Policy or gag rule that kept federal funds from going to any overseas family planning program that had anything to do with abortion?

No media. At all:

A White House spokesman, Bill Burton, said Obama signed an executive order on the ban, without coverage by the media, late Friday afternoon. That was in contrast to the midday signings with fanfare of executive orders on other subjects earlier in the week.

I don’t oppose pragmatic solutions to getting done what I want done or achieving goals I support. On the other hand, the fact that our society continues to see as part of a pragmatic solution the complete playing down of one event – which happens to impact primarily women – while dramatically playing up another event – which happens to impact mostly men – should be something we work to eliminate completely.

I thought Obama wanted to reduce abortions?

That was talking point #1 on all the GOP/FRC stuff I get. You can do better than that, Ben. :)

No, I thought of that gem on my own.

It was what he said though. I also noticed he did it on a Friday night, no cameras, no press. I thought only the Bush Admin. did that kind of stuff.

Well – as you know from reading my stuff – well, once in a while anyway :) – I’m not big Obama lover. Yeah, he’s from the side of the aisle I prefer but I’ve had a lot qualms. McCain et al – meaning mate and party – just would never do it for me so there you are.

Regardless, I’m not happy either with this approach – I get it, I’m not dumb – I know all the whys and wherefores.

And while for now, yeah, sure, I’d far prefer to have the ban lifted than to have it stay in place – whether there’s media for the signing or not.

But I’m very wary, as I have been from the start, with how it is, why it is – and how it reinforces the how and the why – that these issues get relegated to this status.

Frankly, it’s what caused the Clinton women, and some others, to go whole hog against the Dem party.

I can’t imagine ever switching to the GOP platform – I just can’t – but I guess I should never say never – and our country’s parties have changed over time. So who knows.

I am not dumb either, I know why he did it the way he did.
