I was driving home from a lunch downtown earlier this afternoon when, by mistake, I ended up on XM Kids. Now, I don’t end up on a station like that unless one of my kids demands it, three times – maybe four. But I mis-hit one of the pre-set buttons and it was only after hearing a few notes of the song that I then looked at the panel and saw the “XM 1 – 6″ aka XM Channel 116, XM Kids.

Ah.. I thought – so I’m not on one of my adult-retro stations.

However, rather than quickly start jamming my thumb on the steering wheel “mode” or “channel” button to change the station, I simultaneously smiled and teared up just the teeny tiniest bit.  Yeah, the sun was in my eyes here in Cleveland for the first time maybe in weeks, certainly days, but rather than the sting of light in my eyes it was the tug of heartstrings connected to my memories that made me sniffle and gulp back the realization that not only did I recognize the kids’ song I was listening to, but I used to know and sing every single word and sound in it – and I loved it and my kids loved when I did it.

There aren’t a lot of songs that stick with a parent who has listened to literally thousands, possibly millions? of hours of kids’ music for fifteen years. But this is one of those that I would sing with my kids and to my kids.  It’s the textbook definition of classic and, like many great kids’ songs, has a true musical talent and genuis behind it.  Enjoy – and see if it doesn’t get you smiling and moving too.
